New York is New York, and all that that ent{r}ails. It is many things to many people, and that is just the smells!
I enjoy the occasional visit, and even flew the Mrs there for a day out and to have her hair done by Meg Ryan's hairdresser, but there is NO PLACE LIKE CHICAGO to call HOME in the US of A!
Diversity? Got it! Food? Got it! Entertainment? Got it! Bars? Got it! Tall buildings? Got it! Beautiful waterfront DOWNTOWN? Got it! World class public transportation? Got it? Like "L" we do! World class museum campus all in one place? Got it! World class aquarium across the street? Got it! World Class Planetarium next to that? Got it! State of the Art Sports Stadia? Got it! Got 'em all...Bears, Cubs, Sox, Blackhawks/Bulls and even have a decent soccer stadium just outside town!
Yes, called the Second City for good reason, NYC is friggin huge. However, size is not everything....in everything!
Sure, NYC has most of that stuff, too. However, in ChiTown, it is all WITHIN WALKING DISTANCE and the Magnificent Mile, running from the Chicago River to Lakeshore Drive has ALL the shopping you could ever want, with the side streets giving you every other flavor you could ever need.
Then there is Navy Pier, where you can go out on the lake, take an architectural tour, take a trip to your train home, see a Shakespearean play, or IMAX movie, eat whatever you like, watch the BEST Air and Water Show in the country (by far!) etc, etc, etc....
And we have not even talked about how NICE THE PEOPLE ARE IN CHICAGO!!! Helpful, friendly midwesterners.....tell me you have THOSE in NYC!!! ;+}
Anyway, as a Manc transplant, who travels the world for a living, Chicago is one of the TRULY great places to come home to in all the world. And a WORLD CLASS AIRPORT that can get you where you need to go direct!!
NYC is American like London is British! Sure, there are remnants of the country's history in the area, but it is NOT America....not the America that Americans know REALLY exists. For that, you need to get OUT of NYC, or simply get INTO Chicago.
But then I might be a tad biased!! But ONLY a tad!!! :0)
