New York

Large parts of Manchester's architecture is based on original New York thinking and design, as the leading lights of their time were invited over to inspire the work of our forbears.

Manhattan is just a brilliant place.

We went for 10 days in Easter hols. Get on the sightseeing buses in your first couple of days, great way to get your bearings. We got the 48hr unlimited tickets, there are hop-on/hop-off loops going Uptown, Downtown, Brooklyn etc, the night one was really good. http://www.newyorksightseeing.com/

If you're going with the missus & they like shopping, spend a day at Woodbury Common outlet village, about an hour away, they have loads of big names shops at low prices. Can get there by bus from Port Authority, 8th Ave.

If you want a great view dont bother going up the Empire State Building, go up Top of the Rock at the Rockefeller centre, you get a great view of the city AND of the Empire State.

Thanks again everyone - going on my own as its always somewhere always wanted to visit.

Thinking of April or September, want to see sights, get drunk, go to some sports events and planning for about 5 days

Stinking shithole, don't bother. There are plenty of better states in the US

I couldn't agree more. It amazes me that there aren't more suicides there, it's the most depressing place I've ever been. When I worked there you would start at 7:00am and go straight through to 8:00pm just sitting in your cubicle doing boring work. The buildings are so tall that you can never see the sun and everybody is trying to get ahead of everybody else.

Better places to go:

New Orleans - Amazing food, genuinely happy people, cool history and Bourbon Street is an amazing party every day. It's also way cheaper than NYC
San Diego - Beautiful weather, laid back atmosphere
Minneapolis/St Paul - Not a common destination but the people are cool as hell, tons of lakes for boating and fishing, a regular draft beer is about 32 ounces, The Mall of America is something to be seen, the women are beautiful and not hard to "seal the deal" with (if you get my drift)
Philadelphia - The birthplace of America with the best history in the country, The National Constitution Center, Rittenhouse Square, Italian Market, South Street (party atmosphere with tons of bars and restaurants), rabid sports fans
Baltimore - Big city with a small town personality, Inner Harbor area is beautiful, if you like seafood (mostly crabs) you can't do better than Maryland crabs, you can head down to Ocean City, Maryland, you can also get to Washington DC very easily

Sounds like you went to the wrong part, or didn't appreciate it. I've been several times and it's a wonderful place. Opinions eh?

I travelled all over NYC looking for something to like about it and struggled, I only found more knob heads in LA but at least LA is beautiful to look at. As said before New Orleans is magical, some of Arizona is amazing, I even love Dallas TX but I did spend a lot of time there. Both north and South Carolina are beautiful and Alaska is fantastic and the people are friendly. If I want ignoring or generally being treated like shit I'd go to New York or the in-laws.
