Newcastle 11th May 1968 let's have your memories...

The ground in 1968, I was in the far end where Newcastle scored their 3rd and put the shits up me.
Brilliant picture, wasn't there in 68 but I reckon not much had changed on the Gallowgate by 77, although I think they may have added a ramp to the right hand side when they will have built the new East stand

I can’t recall which stand we were in but it was in the (then) open end. We certainly participated in the pitch invasion and my mother’s back garden in Cheadle Hulme had some grass from the St James’s Park pitch growing in it for some years.

I never suspected that there would be such a dramatic end of season match again. Maybe the QPR match is the closest? But it was very different in that beating a team on the verge of relegation at home to take the title does not stack up to an away win against a decent Newcastle team.

Newcastle ended up qualifying for (and winning) the Fairs Cup the following season. That was the first (since the 1955 Cup Final) and last trophy they won!

Also in the 80s we used to play quite often away in London when they were away in London and were always a good lot, but that day in 77 was payback for the takeover in 68
Remember them bringing about 20k to s cup tie at Maine Rd in the early 70s biggest away following I'd ever seen at Maine Rd. Quite a scary afternoon and they beat us 2 1 I think. They were officially at home as they had been banned from hosting cup games owing to a pitch invasion against Forest twelve months earlier. One shit day!

No I don’t know those, I was from Fairfield Road end, I knew the Bamfords and Les Cracknell.
i knew johnny and barry les is still a good mate newton crescent lad cardinals hat ps we took 15 thosand the next season in the fa cup 69 no score draw beat them in the replay 2 nil over 60 thousand at maine road

I’m sure one of the Bamfords passed away a few years ago, not sure which one it was, I was from Wood Street shops end of Langley.

The name sounds familiar, and I’m not thinking Tony Towers, when I was old enough to start drinking I used to go in the Whod a thowt it or the Woodman, I left Langley for about 3 years in mid 70s.
