Newcastle 1968

Picture the scene -
Me, aged 10 stood on Oldham Rd, with my eldest brother. When his 4 mates turn up in a ford banger with scarfs n banners hanging out of every window.
"Today is not a day for young un`s" he says as he climbs aboard. And off they go to Newcastle.
2 days later he returns home still drunk and a chunk of St James`s pitch in his pocket.
It was only years later, when I began doing aways with my mates that I understood what he meant.

44 years later its my turn. But as my lad is 28 and been all over europe with CITY, I`m hoping he will look after me and stop me digging up The Sports Direct Arean`s pitch, and get me home within 2 days.

hope it isn't the same. My heart'll go into overdrive
I was on the halfway line opposite the main stand, the atmosphere you could cut with a knife. We were mixed in with the NEWCASTLE fans but i never saw any trouble.I HAVE NEVER FELT TENSION LIKE I DID THAT DAY AND I DONT THINK I EVER WILL AGAIN.To all you young blues going on sunday THE VERY BEST OF LUCK TO YOU ALL,............The battle will be hard,...............YOU WILL WITNESS THE PAIN I FELT IN ....1968.

Can really see Samir getting a goal in this one. Didn't capitalise on a great opportunity in the Derby hopefully that will be playing on his mind.

i was there. great day. i've never seen so many blues at an away game apart from wembley. the a1 was a sea of coaches and cars all carrying blue-decked supporters, between 17,000 and 22,000 of us depending on which report you read.

a really nice touch was that going back through towns and villages in county durham, young sunderland fans were out on the road waving and giving us the thumbs up.

I was at Newcastle too and I thought we won pretty easily even though it was 4-3 in the end,

On a slightly different point I also went to the 3-1 win at OT that year - I was 17 and went with united supporting friends on the united supporters coach from North Wales. I was in the Stretford End with my City scarf and roared my head off for the whole match without any problems. I know things got a lot nastier not long after that but sometimes I wish it could go back to being less mindless hostility between fans as it is in many sports - and I say that having had our car kicked and a brick chucked at it by some "delightful" united fans while stuck at traffic lights on the way home after Monday nights game

A lot of this going on in Failsworth.. Oldham rd, near the wheatsheaf.. cars stuck at the Mersey rd lights getting kicked, and bottled. Scum bags!

I was lucky enough to be taken by my mum and dad even though I was only ten myself
I can't remember much of it but I remember everyone being ecstatic on the way home

This Sunday I'll be returning for only the second time with my wife and two daughters
Let's hope they get to feel the excitement I did all those years ago

I went with the Dukinfield branch that day, when we were winning 4 two everyone was trying to get to the front to get in the pitch, all chanting champions then Newcastle scored again with a header, it was shear hell waiting for that final whistle, but to Newcastle's credit as soon as it did they played congratulations by cliff Richards, everybody was totally exhausted. Well cliff does that to you !
