Newcastle post match thread

Why do we owe Vinny a chance to go to a world cup when the right thing for him to do would be to pack in his international career and try and repay the club that has been paying his wages for the last 3 years while he has played hardly any football for the club through constantly being injured. I wouldn't care if he never kicked another ball for Belgium ever again. We owe him nowt.

I disagree. He is special. I know many have slated him for playing meaningless matches with Belgium, but they aren't meaningless to HIM. He's been an unbelievable servant to the club, a tower of strength, who has never complained, and who should have a coach/front office job waiting for him with us the day he retires. I know he's on through 2019, but my hope is that -- assuming we clinch the title at all, and if so at some point before the last match -- he announces at that point that he's hanging up the boots after the World Cup. He wouldn't want fanfare nor to be a distraction so I believe he'd wait till then. Might be a wonderful motivator for the late stages of the CL too assuming we got that far -- "a win, for Vin".

Sorry, OT.

Yeah Halsey on Bein Sport rightly pointed out that if a defender purposely blocks a shot then the attacker is played onside and if there was VAR then it would have been a goal as whilst most fans don’t know the rule, every official does.
The diagram at the top of page 201 of the latest "Laws of the Game" seems to contradict Halsey. You'll have to look it up to see the diagram, but the wording states, "The shot by a team mate (A) rebounds off or is deflected by an opponent to attacker (B) who is penalised for playing or touching the ball having previously been in an offside position". Doesn't say anything about the defender's intent. This might be one of those "under-the-table" rules that PGMOL refs have made up, like not giving a goal when it comes off a player's hand, even if it was clearly not intentional.

Reading some of the smacked arses on this thread leads me to worry we have an outbreak of rawkitis.

City played pretty well tonight, maybe not the best performance of the season. Yes the finishing was wasteful and could have bitten us in the arse.

There was little wrong with the first half performance apart from the finishing, that said hitting the woodwork and Elliot making the best save I have yet to see this season shows how fine margins can be. We could have been 3/4 in front and should really have been at least 2.

Second half the level dropped but until the late stages we never looked in to much trouble.

As someone with a bit of divided loyalties in this fixture it was a sad sight seeing Newcastle parking the bus, and clearly trying to just keep the score respectable. To be fair thier tactics nearly worked because Gayle should have given them an unexpected point at the end. Also worth considering that they have a must win on Saturday against Brighton clearly Rafa saw this game as a free hit and almost sure defeat and chose to rest and avoid injury to players whom he needs to come up with the goods on Saturday.

He is in this position because he has an owner who makes Swales look good. An owner who has ripped the club apart and left Benitez with a weaker team than the one that went down. He seems to be doing better than most when it comes to polishing a turd, but making one shine enough to beat City might be beyond him.

There would be little comment on their defensive stance tonight were we playing a Championship side in the cup, well we were playing a Championship side in the Premier League tonight. I dont blame Newcastle for playing the way they did, nor do I blame Benitez for proritising the next match. I would hope that the takeover happens soon and money is spent and that when our paths cross in seasons to come they will not play in the manner that they did tonight.

Scrape victory? 78% possession, 18 shots to 5??
I can't believe we're only 15 points clear and I can't believe we haven't won more than 18 games on the spin. WTF? Some people are easily pleased is all I can say.
