Newcastle Thread - 2023/24

Just got to get rid of Gordon and not sign Maddison.
I'm not sure that I would give up on Gordon just yet, he looked really good today for England U21's with an assist and a good goal that was disallowed through no fault of his own.

hope they have another gear up in this window ans they need much more than Tonali if they want to reach top4 again.
they had no international cup games, now they have probably a tough CL draw where they are likely be third nd go over to EL from February.
that will be lot of extra games to manage and their first 11 is solid in PL, their bench is pretty mid table.

I do think they overachieved with the 4th place, or were solid enough to punish the horrible Chelse, Pool showing, but but those will come back hard imo for the CL places.

LB, RW and some proper bench options still needed after Tonali for them and thats still hard task to do top4 back-to-back with these PL rivals all spending big sums.

Do have a feeling Howe will be found out the higher Castle goes or the higher the tasks ahead of him, they reached CL a bit too early imo, big learning curve ahead of them. can see around April question marks come up about Howe and he is aint their Mancini albeit more solid than Hughes was for us.

have no idea whats their transfer kitty, Tonali is around 60m cost, they cannot expect much for their deadwood, maybe 30m for St Maximien if they sell him, and bit of change for the rest, but can they go and spend another 150m or so this window or lot less due to FFP?

they missed out on both Maddison and Szoboszlai.

overall their scouting aint bad at all, certainly more solid that some of the crazy moves done by Garry Cook for us with Kolo Toure, Adebayor, Robinho etc.

they get most of their new faces from abroad, younger, upcoming players.

I get what you're saying but I trust what the club are doing now, everything is done for a reason and more often then not, we now usually get things right.

The time to judge our transfer window is at the end of it.

We'll struggle for top 4 this year, that should not be in any doubt but I do think if everything goes right then we can still finish 5th which will be good enough for the CL for the season after next.

Failing to qualify for the CL is not the end of the world and I would settle for any European competition qualification. If West Ham can win in Europe, why can’t we?

Football wise we probably have hit top 4 too early, financially we had to do it because we will go up a level once the increased revenue starts filtering into the club. For now, we know we have increased sponsorship money, Premiership prize money and we have CL income, all to come. The trouble for us is that it's all still in the future so we can't take advantage of it yet.

This time next year will be totally different if we can finish top 5.

We’re boiling piss again as we’re looking to host a game between at St James’ between Saudi and Mexico and we’ve brough out a new green away kit. Both of these are really good commercially and both will increase our income and exposure.

As for Howe, I think he’s done a great job and will continue to do so, even if next season is difficult because of others improving more than we do and our extra games.

Tonali should be announced in the next few games, maybe as soon as tomorrow, hopefully he will then go away and get some rest as he’s looked a bit knackered recently playing for Italy U21’s. I expect that he will be behind most of our squad for fitness and he’ll take a couple of months to be properly integrated into the starting 11 unless we’re hit by injuries.

I would like to see us bring in a quality left-back as our next top priority and then maybe look to bring in some up and coming kids to develop and maybe they can get a few games as back-up to cover injuries whilst learning the game.

A good season for me next season will be any European qualification and I would give up my family for a domestic trophy, even the Carabao Cup as we have to start somewhere.

Champions League qualification is massive for us financially but I would probably swap that for winning the Carabao Cup having had time to reflect on last season. I'm still in avoid relegation mode so I expect next season to be another good one simply because we should be nowhere near the bottom of the league.
