Newcastle United (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

I thought Newcastle played ok and had a real go at us. They got away with murder for constant fouling and Jolinton should have been off. In the end missed chances and poor refereeing/VAR decisions did for us. How that wasnt a nailed on penalty for Phil is beyond me. There were at least half a dozen fouls very similar that were all penalised after that. Second goal looked offside to me. Cherki has to get to grips with the speed and the physicality of this league. The subs gave nothing and diminished our goal threat. Shame but we go again.
Pretty much this.

We miss players like De Bruyne in tough times, a true playmaker. After they took the lead, I never felt we were capable of equalizing. I don't know why Pep's reaction is so slow when the team's performance is poor in the first half. It was clear from the first half that our defense was easily breached and that some players weren't at their usual level of concentration.

Not got a problem with the team or Pep today.

That result was determined by the worst officiating I've seen in 40 odd years of watching football. The persistent team fouling, the blatant taking out of Foden in the action of an attempt at goal. The blatant handball. The pull on Doku. The scandalous manipulation of the offside images. The addition on 38 seconds in injury time when the ball was in play for no more than half of the 8 minutes added.

It pisses us off, can you imagine being a player in those circumstances? Knowing that nothing you do will affect the result.

We're still in this.

Circle the wagons Pep.

Fucked that up a bit, didn't we! Some shite play there, and we've played right into the narrative that no Haaland no win.

Although it seems Tonali and Joe Linton have some kind of diplomatic immunity to bookings apparently. One yellow between the two on 90 minutes, and I'm not sure how that happens.

The Foden penalty I accepted, he'd already played the ball. Until ten minutes later when he pulls play back ten passes to give a foul. Hmm..

Also, the winning goal. Why did they measure the offside from the defenders upper arm, a part of his body he can't play the ball with?

Deserved loss, atrocious defence and even worse finishing. Summer window is not far away
The sluggishness that puts us under pressure and the carelessness in passing to the opposition so much over the last two seasons also makes us a hard watch.
It seems no one is recognising the issues and addressing it.

Giving Doku, Cherki and Foden effectively free roles might work at home, but away from home against a physical side, we were always going to struggle.

Foden in particular was shocking.

Completely overrun in midfield and although the referee allowed them to hack us all game, our football isn’t good enough to overcome that these days.

Not really sure I can get behind pinning it on Gonzalez when he was our only midfielder for the entire game. Don’t really remember him doing much wrong at all and he wasn't invisible at all to me.

Obviously he isn’t totally to blame for that defeat and others were arguably worse including Phil Foden and Cherki who did no where near enough.

Gonzalez was more in terms of functionality when you need a higher gear and level. A world class 6 really makes a difference in those games.
