Newcastle United (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

I was expecting us to really make a statement but the reality is we’re not as good as we think we are. Really poor in front of goal today! Maybe too arrogant? Our title winning teams would have won that today. I’ll be really surprised if Arsenal lose points tomorrow.

Re the 2nd Newcastle goal supposedly Dias' elbow is playing Guimares onside but last I checked football is played with the feet and not the arms. So in my opinion offside should be based on where the feet are and not the upper body, in which case Guimaraes would have been miles offside.
Yeah and the conclusive "evidence" of cartoon picture, has been doctored from the actual footage that sky showed a couple of times and froze, while var contacted AI for the "fix", the cartoon shows Dias jumping, the actual picture Dias has both feet on the ground, and it's not a frame issue.

Yeah I've noticed a few Rags fans adopting an 'anyone but Liverpool or City' mentality and getting behind Arsenal. Not that we need that lot on our side - kiss of death!

Long way to go, City have some amazing players but I did find it interesting to contrast City today with when we went to SJP last month. I felt City have a lot more 'chaos' in the games where you can score the goals but you can also concede them (vs Arsenal where it tends to be a lot more sterile as we smother midfields, but probably a pretty dull watch for the neutral). But I guess you're always at risk of being punished if you don't take your chances (as the opponent will get some) in those chaotic games so I'd imagine Pep will be looking at that.

Like I said though, long way to go in the season, we still have to visit the Etihad. SJP is a tough place to go, they rise to the occasion against the big boys, and don't be surprised if they get turned over by some lower table side at SJP next time around.
Whilst I agree with some of that, I can't help but feel like you're smirking whilst you write it. I suppose I can't blame you for that!

As I said, rather you than scouse or scum, but it's still fairly close!

This is the problem, even assuming that cheating is out of the question it will vary week by week depending on the officials and how they see it, therefore it's not fit for purpose, unless fully automated (in the future) without bias.

Yeah for us it's a brilliant result but on a personal level I genuinely wanted you to win today as I was chatting with a fellow Bluemoon member earlier this week who was taking his grandchild to SJP today for their 1st ever City away game so I did want City to win for the kid (but then lose a different match shortly afterwards!).

Impossible to argue with that, to be fair you seem a decent guy, so will wish you and you alone, best of luck in coming second.

;-)

Yeah what the actual feck is up with those pics?!!? 'This one's tight, it could well be ruled offside. Oh hang on, here's a completely shitty picture that could have been knocked up by a six year old and bears absolutely no correlation to the video still which proves conclusively beyind any doubt that the goal was onside'.

At least use the bloody image of the actual players!

Your commitment to his cause is undoubtedly appreciated. Having said that, perhaps upstairs isn't the place for you after a City loss.
Sort of, thanks but no thanks, ta.

Even the picture they’ve come up with, is still showing him as offside. There’s no ‘interpretation’ with this one. The law actually says that you take the offside position from the armpit. Not any part of the arm, not the cuff of the sleeve (that’s for handball). Of course, we may still have lost, but this is a decision that is just wrong.
The actual words are:

The hands and arms of all players, including the goalkeepers, are not considered. For the purposes of determining offside, the upper boundary of the arm is in line with the bottom of the armpit.

Didn't know where else to put this but after 12 games under Pep in each season we've been:

(The points we finished on)

2025: 3rd, 22 points
2024: 2nd, 23 points (71)
2023: 1st, 28 points (91)
2022: 2nd, 29 points (89)
2021: 2nd, 26 points (93)
2020: 9th, 20 points (86)
2019: 4th, 25 points (81)
2018: 1st, 32 points (98)
2017: 1st, 34 points (100)
2016: 3rd, 27 points (78)

I think we'll finish between 75-80 points this year, which is fine. Got to be going for the league next season, though.

They completely fucked this up. It's 100% offside.

And the annoying part is that because Liverpool threw such a bitchfit about their disallowed goal to the point where they created a narrative successfully, us having the same reaction is just going to be seen as sour grapes because we "got one" against them.

Yep, and using a 6 year olds drawing doesn't help either.

Ah wow yes so we need to disregard the elbow as that's part of the arm. It's a shocker then - I thought the only reason it was considered onside was because upper body counts but if the arms don't (and the shitty image showed the elbow playing him on) then it should have been ruled off. For that and the Foden 'non-pen' I'd be livid.

Indeed not. Thing is, as I’ve posted on a different thread, he either doesn’t know the law and used the wrong part of Dias to measure and, of course, neither does the assistant VAR, which is bad enough or, he does know the law and has chosen to ignore it…
