Newcastle United (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

Strange game, and it could’ve finished 4-3 to either side. Some horrible decisions though. 2 blatant penalties and 1 Magpie goal that shouldn’t have stood.

Problem with Phil’s not given penalty is probably that he had time to shoot. If he hadn’t we would’ve gotten it.

Doesn't really matter though , does it ?

If reckless challenges aren't gonna be pulled up in the penalty afea, or anywhere else for that matter, then we might as well all give up and go home, Foden was taken out completely ..... I doubt if you'd find many Newcastle fans who, if they were completely honest, didn't think that was a penalty.

Anyone think yesterday's reffing was down to the dippers and the press/media moaning about the dippers off side goal ?

Judging by the minimalist coverage of the cheating going on yesterday by the officials it's obvious they couldn't give a fuck if we get robbed.

The problem with Phil’s non penalty was suspect officiating.
The tackle was late, nowhere near the ball, smashed into Phil’s ankle, and could have caused an injury. But according to the VAR, there’s nothing to see!

I’ve realised I do not get over a defeat as easily as I used to! Is it old age or just getting cynical because from all I read on here we were robbed by officials.

Ah well. MANCHESTER CITY THE BEST TEAM IN THE LAND AND ALL THE WORLD.
We will bounce back next week. Come on City.

MANCHESTER CITY THE BEST TEAM IN THE LAND AND ALL THE WORLD!

Sorry @East Level 2 to be a ‘happy clapper’ but my team need 110% support and from me they will get it even if I am feeling a bit down. The team will never know because I will always cheer them on!!

Didn't know where else to put this but after 12 games under Pep in each season we've been:

(The points we finished on)

2025: 3rd, 22 points
2024: 2nd, 23 points (71)
2023: 1st, 28 points (91)
2022: 2nd, 29 points (89)
2021: 2nd, 26 points (93)
2020: 9th, 20 points (86)
2019: 4th, 25 points (81)
2018: 1st, 32 points (98)
2017: 1st, 34 points (100)
2016: 3rd, 27 points (78)

I think we'll finish between 75-80 points this year, which is fine. Got to be going for the league next season, though.
No reason whatsoever why we can't be going for it this season, and in fact to suggest otherwise is ridiculous at this stage of the season. There are 78 points to pay for yet, yes, SEVENTY-EIGHT and Arsenal have yet to have their blip, and they will.

It's the usual Blue Moon hangover isn't it, drop 3 points and we're doomed again, "shadow of our former selves", "not good enough", "won't catch Arsenal" crap again. Just a few weeks ago we weren't going to catch Liverpool, "light years ahead of us" was one verdict.

We did enough to win yesterday, we were robbed. You can't do anything about that but if the decisions had been given we would still be just 4 points behind Arsenal, and that's assuming that they win today which isn't a given, but OK we could be 7 behind but we've been in worse positions which far fewer matches to play.

I think we have every chance, just wish people would have a bit more belief, this club deserves that if nothing else. We see the media slagged off a lot on here when they're critical but they haven't written us off yet.

We were never going to win the league after last seasons ‘fall off the cliff’ but despite yesterdays result we are making progress and unlike last season we are so much more creative and offer a scoring threat.

We have to persevere with Cherki because most of the creativity comes from him.

Pep doesn’t get everything right and Savinho on for Doku was a massive downgrade.

His hands are also tied because I’m pretty sure if Rodri had been fit, he would have paired him with Nico to give us that much needed physicality to compete with Newcastle.

We were definitely on the wrong end of the VAR decisions and the tackle alone on Foden was surely a red card offence for reckless play !

The referee allowed them to foul and kick us all day without producing any cards.

Donna made some great saves (big difference from last season) but has to do better on corners and concentrate on getting a purchase on the ball rather than wrestling with the opposition.

Pissed off about the result but much more optimism than last season.
I agree with much of what you say but I think this was not a games for Cherki. I think we would have been better with Reinders starting in midfield and Phil playing off the right. It is a bit frustrating that Newcastle were so up for the game when they were pretty meek against the dippers and Arsenal.

Draw would have been fair on general play but if you want to win the League you need wins. The VAR guys seemed determined not to give City anything when the penalties were clear cut (by modern standards) and Newcastle's second goal was clearly offside to all but a machine. That said, I thought we lacked the ruthless professionalism of a side determined to win and were a bit too nice and lightweight with a few too many smiles and flicks. We need to harden up and wise up. At the very least we need CL and those places look very competitive this season.

That’s fine mate. I’m just saying what I see. We play well, look forward to a tough away game and we fail, again. We are better than last season but still a way of winning the league IMO. Said it before but you can’t win the league when your striker is scoring more goals than the rest of the squad combined…
We didn't fail, we were robbed. There's a difference. I don't think we'd have won that if we had put the ball in the new 5 times, they wouldn't have been given.

I'm not usually one to think this way because I know refs make mistakes and consistency is bad but yesterday's officiating was diabolical by anybody's standards. Even their first goal was given by the ref initially before he saw the linesman's flag.

Haaland made the wrong decision ..... he had the pace, and the better option would have been to take it around the advancing keeper .
It still doesn't take away the fact that the refereeing cost us that match. The way it went we could have scored 5 times and they wouldn't have counted.

Yep, we didn't do enough to clear that second Necastle goal either considering how many men we had back trying to defend that corner, and the time and effort that it took Barnes to score it ..... as a goalkeeper or defender you HAVE to make sure you get to the ball first, but we failed to do that, whilst Barnes clearly did !
