Next Rail Strikes Announced.

Spoke to a train driver the other day and asked what was the main reason she was on strike, she said it was because they (Railtrack) are trying to get rid of (I think 1400 track engineers and workers) and in her words she said we already have a Victorian knackered rail system, for safety reasons we should be employing more people, not making then redundant! Funny how this never seems to get mentioned, only thing I hear is greedy train drivers on 60k want a pay rise?

Pay is a major reason too, most rail staff have not seen a pay rise in 4 years which, given inflation and everything else that has gone through the roof in that period,is a huge reduction in real income.

She is right though, ultimately, the brains at NR HQ are trying to dumb down jobs and make redundancies while also taking away benefits and hard earned rights. They wish to introduced annualised hours and get rid of sick pay while introduce agency staff to the roles that are left, and fit the bill,on minimum pay.All this, while like has been stated.....when the railway needs more competent bodies, not less.

Its a fucking sorry situation at the minute, and one which the powers that be are showing no inclination to settle.

Drivers are striking over their own pay, not Railtrack which hasn't existed for a generation.

They seem on the ball.

There’s a number of reasons they’re striking, the cutting of vital jobs to the rail network is one of several.

The vast majority of those striking for pay aren’t drivers and are on lower salaries.

Indeed.

They want to change my role. Make it non safety critical and accept a £10,000 pay cut for it.

Station staff jobs subbed out to Serco/Mitie only required as an when on minimum pay.

Less face to face interaction. Push passengers into using mobile phone apps over booking offices. This also includes assistance for disabled passengers. Where are they going to get that on unmanned stations with no guards available to assist?

Passengers have every right to get angry. They should turn it onto this government and support the people who are striking to protect them as well as our own terms and conditions.

There’s no other walk of life where offering someone a £10,000 a year pay cut would wash. And the public relies on the rail network.

They’re fucking cheeky cunts and the shareholders should go before front line staff.

I only mentioned drivers, not others.

Drivers striking to save jobs in an organisation that folded in 2002. I was a bizarre point to make. Save Railtrack jobs...
