I think the op's rant's are a little misguided if I'm completely honest. Having just finished Paul Lakes fantastic book it's obvious that there was a drinking culture encouraged (almost nurtured) under Kendall at Maine Road, as was the case at most football clubs during this time. I've read the book myself and just think it gives an honest insight to the behaviour of footballers at the time.

As for the scuffles with McMahon then anyone who had any contact at City during this time will conform with the opinion that McMahon was a tosser who actually believed playing for City was beneath him and deserved everything he got.

The Irish business isn't for me to comment as I'm not Irish and don't generally care two hoots about it?

But I remember Quinns remorse on MOTD that night after we had been relegated against Liverpool, far more than anything offered by either Alan Ball or Francis Lee.

Interesting thread. Nowadays, players are totally aloof and you can't get near them. It used to be different.

Before all the money came into it you could get to know them a bit as they were'nt averse to socialising with the fans, especially on pre season tours.

Got to meet, drink with and talk to quite a few City players at their leisure and they were mainly great. I have met Niall a few times and he's a top bloke. He has totally justifiable grievances against City which I think now hinder his thoughts/opinions on us. Blimey he could drink though!

Some great guys: Peter Beagrie, Mike Sheron, Terry Phelan. Trevor Sinclair, Kit Symons, Michael Brown.

I haven't read his book and don't intend too.

You've read one footballers autobiography, you've read them all.

I'm not saying the people claiming he can get a bit lairy after a few sherberts are lying but of all the footballers I've bumped into over the years, he is in a select band of about half a dozen who seemed like genuinely nice blokes to me and I could give you list from here to next Christmas of one's I've met who have been complete pricks.

From the comments made from people who have read the book, it seems like every other book I've read by footballers, ie.

The managers who liked them were genii and those who didn't fancy them so much, were clueless fuckers.

Seems pretty standard fare to me.

CityKev- if you'd taken a bit of time on Paul Lake's book you'd have picked out that Quinn was one of the few people to give a fuck about Lake when he was injured. Moreover, Lake highlights that City were a shambles, and Quinn just echoes this.

Gave his testimonial money away, just for that he must be considered a decent guy.

With regard to his drinking, the game has moved on a lot since his time. He might have taken it to excess, but players going out back then was a regular occurrence.

With regards to the drinking aspect I'm good mates with rick Holden in the isle of man and he's as big a piss artist now as he was back in his city days!! Some of his stories regarding pre season tours would make your eyes water! Rick already loved a beer but tony coton and Quinny were big piss artists back then and days he wasn't surprised that there was a drinking culture at city when big joe royle took over as it was one big pissup at oldham when he was there!!

Well, contrary to the OP...

In Italy during the 92 tour we were invited to the teams training camp in the Italian mountains.. we spent about 2-3 hours with all the players and they were ALL available for chats & photo's. None more than Quinn and McMahon. They were both very chatty very welcoming.

Thoroughly enjoyed my time with them...

Why surprised....alot of players back then was p1ssheads. Its amazing how much more professional players has become over the last 20 years. Also Naill is a lightweight compared to the likes of Merson who were doing coke and drinking all the time
