Nah, Otamendi was poor regardless of whether he got the help he should have from.Mendy or not.

But to suggest Pep was naive enough enough to leave Salah 1 v 1 on Ota with 40 yards behind is naive.

Well I didn't see him gesturing to Mendy to get back in position, did you?

I also didn't see any of the people like Sam Lee who were tweeting about Guardiola ripping Otamendi a new one from the touchline mention him doing the same to Mendy, which he most definitely would if he was abandoning his defensive duties.

He did comment about fixing the problem of Liverpool getting behind Mendy in the return leg. So I guess there is that.

You know, from Pep himself.

I agree about Mendy obviously doing as he was told, he never moved from the left wing sideline. What I don't get though is what Pep thought Nico could possibly do against Salah's pace? I know Nico's control let him down a couple of times and caused issues but when the ball was played in the channel he had fucking no chance.

1) Source?

2) Did he say words to the effect of "I'll fix them getting in behind my wayward LB" or did he say, "I'll stop them getting in behind that channel" because you know full well that wanting to stop Liverpool getting down that channel is not the same as telling Mendy to defend deeper or double up on Salah. Quickest fix would be dropping Otamendi.

I was pretty obvious from Mendy's behaviour not changing all the way through that first half that he was where he was supposed to be. He was a few feet from pep, not getting bollocked, he was not going back but drifting out of position, he was very deliberately playing very high up.

We butchered a few offside traps, which is where most of their really dangerous opportunities came from down there, the other times they were being pushed so wide by the balls into the channel, we had men back to cover quickly enough.

You'd have to ask Pep for his exact thinking, but I assume he'd say that if our back 3 had nailed the offside better, it would have not been too dangerous.

It wasn't his best game but I don't think we should make too much of it. Does anyone know how many minutes he played for Argentina? Something tells me Klopp identified him as a target from the outset. When our players were warming up there was a shot of Klopp paying close attention, almost as though he was looking for weaknesses(who looks off) but maybe I'm reading into that a bit too much.

He was left exposed, this is true.

However going to ground and making lunging yellow card begging challenges seem to be just how he plays.

He's not a bad defender though. Just not a great one. We need a couple of great CB's adding to the squad next term.
