North Stand Construction Discussion

Joe Mercer Way is still a concern for me.
Every planning picture I’ve seen only shows new tarmac plans for about 20 yards.

I’m not sure we are going to get a full 200 meter nice new tarmac’d road complementing the new stand/hotel.

People just say they will as it will look weird, half new tarmac, half cracked dirty sky blue.
But yet 3 screens looks weird in the ground so I’m not sure aesthetics is something they are particularly bothered about.

The fan zone was never scheduled to be open this season though. As you say, we don't know what the concourses are like. But other than bogs and stairs/escapes, they don't need to be completely done to be operational.

At the end of the day, if it is in their contract to open this season, even if it is just for the last day to meet that stipulation, by hook or by crook they will open it this season. Imo.

I don't have a problem with City opening the tier for the Villa game if it is finished properly, and a proper test event has been held. That would be great.

But, I don't want a scenario like the SS when it was rushed and the finish and snagging, as you know, wasn't great, and still isn't great.

I also don't want a Coop Live Arena scenario when it obviously wasn't finished, but it was still opened for concerts, and had a lot of bad and negative publicity.

I don't want City fans moaning about the tier not being finished and there being issues on the day of the Villa game, if it's open for the game?

I appreciate Sisk have been pulling out all the stops to at least get the tier and concourses ready and open for the Villa game. If they do that, that's a great achievement, considering the complexity of the build.

A good shout. The women are about to clinch the title and we have a home Derby for the Youth Cup Final. These could be test events with reduced crowds which include the new stand.
Last women's home game is v Liverpool on 3rd May and is sold out. Would be great for this to be moved to the Etihad.

I don’t know any serious commercial venture that would leave JMW looking like that.

The only thing I can think of is that it’s the responsibility of the co-op Arena after 20 yards!

It will undoubtedly get done one day, otherwise it will turn to rubble it’s such a mess, but now seems like the most obvious time.

Perhaps it’s a tribute to Manchester’s traditional potholes ;-)

Bizarre, but I’m guessing if we knew the reason we would understand. I’m not having 200 metres of tarmac is a cost issue though!

I can just imagine Sheikh Mansour opening the new stand, pointing at JMW and saying “WTF has gone on there? Sort it out by next week”!

Yeah, just to be clear, when I say I think they would open it and get it to a stage where it is ready. I am assuming all of the above. All within their size and capacity as professional contractor, and relative to the scale and significance of this.

Worth noting that we’re talking about 1 match and then the season is over. No one getting to see City in a potential title decider is going to be upset if a few things aren’t finished and there’s going to be no other games going on while work continues.

Co-op Live was open for business full time before it was close to being finished. It was also a complete building with all the intricacies rather than an add on to a single stand.

Just to add that the South Stand 3rd tier opened in August 2015 and it wasn’t ‘finished’ until early 2016. They were doing all sorts of work on it for a while after its first game.

Another huge steel roof beam about to go up.

The steel beams are getting wider as the space inbetween the two claws is getting wider.

I'll post the other pictures tonight.

Forgetting the SkyBar for a moment, whilst we can see the main GA seats nearly done (bar a few gaps on the join) we can't see whats going on down those new vomitories or whats going on behind the stand where those descend to - all of that MUST be operationally safe for a test event before any members of joe public can fill the GA seats to get up over 60,000. And City have got to weave that test event (which only needs to include the newly expanded tier in the NS, like the test event was for the South Stand) inbetween now and then.

Last game of the season is 32 days away. Looking at that weeknds during that time frame:=

25/04 - no chance, Cup Semi Final.
02-03/05 - possible as Everton away is not till Monday
09-10/05 - home to Brentford
16-17/05 - no chance (will be Cup Final or Bournmouth Away)
24/05 - last game of the season against Aston Villa

Midweeks - definitely Crystal Palace and probably Bournemouth to fit in..

So if doesn't happen one evening midweek looks like one chance on 2nd or 3rd May.

I can’t see how it can open this season, no test events been done yet or even mentioned. Half the areas not even done yet for thousands of people to go up too.

Busy summer - is there concerts on at all? Can the stand be used then ? But I’m guessing the stage and everything will be infront of it
Take That doing five nights in June

we're at home to Brentford

They might do a test run in sections (potentially brentford ),the first 10 rows upto the new tunnels .

I know the fans won’t get upset. I never said upset. There was a lot of fall out from the Coop Live Area premature opening, and I don’t want something similar happening to the North stand opening. If the tier is open for the Villa match, it should be something positive, a wow factor for the fans, added to what could be very special day for the fans and the club if City win the title and do the domestic treble.(not tempting fate)

Other than that, it’s just me. I like everything to be completed. To be finished. To look good. I’ve been to loads of new builds in town, towers, office blocks, etc, when they have been completed fully, and they look superb. Some have blown me away. I want that for the new tier and North stand.

I remember going to Spurs new stadium in the CL. That blew me away. I want that for all City fans who will be in the new tier for the Villa game, if that happens? I’m looking forward to seeing the pictures and the videos, as I will be stood on SSL1 for the game.

What if the club allow fans to access the new seats in NSL2 from the lower section of NSL2, as opposed to accessing the seats through the new NSL2 turnstiles and concourses? Just a thought.

Don’t see any reason to think it won’t be done when the construction is finished and all the other landscaping and resurfacing is done.
