North Stand Construction Discussion

Thats interesting mate. Any word on dates for the rest?

Completion targets, as noted in public in April last year. Not seen any updates since.

• the Stand, Nov 25
• Office block/museum Nov 25
• Hotel, Apr/may 26
• city square, Aug/sep 26.

It was interesting they saw the office opening at roughly the same time as the stand. Probably because of the shop/museum element that links to the stand. But that is the element that is currently furthest behind (and has had some significant changes to), so I could see that running late.

The hotel was always planned almost a season later, and then the square and public areas etc, almost a full year after the stand.

Bear in mind also that those targets were noted in support of discharging a planning condition, so while available in the public domain for those that know where to look, they weren't exactly 'advertised' as such. I.e it wasn't a formal statement or press release, so they aren't really dates that would have any meaningful impact on anyone's reputation if they did slip. Unlike the co-op for example that had set opening dates and bookings.

If the North Stand is finished on time (Nov 25) do you think the club will start selling tickets in January 26? Maybe sell half season tickets?

Otherwise it’s going to be empty for 9mths

Safe to say…!

Haha, yea I was being diplomatic.

On the one hand, it is the smallest and by far the simplest of the component buildings. And two thirds of it, have fuck all internal fit out to worry about. So it should be the quickest to build. But it looks like they just left it so late, and the changes to the content can't have helped. Maybe people are just going to have to wait to buy new Khusanov kits straight after a game, with their pie and pint still in hand.

Wonder if the site itself will look relatively tidy when next season starts? Might not be a need for any of the cranes by August with focus mostly being on the internals and cladding etc.

Some more photographs from a very windy Sunday afternoon.

In those two photos, you really get the feel for how high the cover for the city square space will sit. The missing panels with the vertical holes in the middle are where the roof trusses will connect to.

I do pity that whole level and all the bedrooms (with the half height windows) that will look straight out onto the etfe roof. With the best acoustic measures in the world, when the wind and rain hits those cushions, it's going to be loud. That whole side will have similar issues but that level in particular will get the worst of it.

Could it be that when ssskies arrived the beam had just been offloaded from a wagon rather than being prepared for a lift?
Possibly yeah. Or part adjusting it to line it up. They are huge pieces aren't they, the photos from the ground really put the scale into perspective.

Is anyone going down today to take some pictures, just in case the 1st of the steel roof beams is being lifted into place?

Hopefully one of the steel roof beams will be in place before tomorrow’s match. I’ll take some picture from SSL1 and SSL2 after I’ve helping 1894 with the display.

I’m trying get my head around how they’ll prop the beams. If you look in the compound pic there are what seem to be yellow gantries? Maybe these are what will be attached to the connectors being welded to the roof?? It still doesn’t explain how they’ll get above the height of the current cables? In other words…. I don’t know [emoji23]

Added thought: If those are gantries then they could be what is going on the roof. Scissor lifts could then be used to access the beams and attach the cables. I assume the beams will be propped as per the South Stand, with supports coming from the new terracing area.

That's a great spot. Maybe they might straddle two coupled beams at a time, on the welded footings, in a hit and miss pattern. Like they did below when cutting the back off. Then they brace them sideyways, and the weight isn't only downwards onto a single beam back onto the prop below

It is fascinating to see this giant meccano set turning into a stand, a hotel and leisure facilities, but as someone who always loves watching construction and demolition, I wish Professor Stanley Unwin was around to make sense of all the technical terminolitudes
