Given that it looks increasingly likely that Vinny’s season is going to be a complete wash-out, and that Samir Nasri won’t be back either at any point in the season, in these circumstances, it doesn't seem reasonable to expect the team, or even the squad, to carry four competitions on its shoulders. We're well in the hunt for the league, whatever the media, with their long-standing Arsenal love-in, may think. We're still very much in the CL. I'd be very disappointed if we didn't get to quarter-final stage. Semi-final is not beyond us. And we've got a tough, but doable semi-final against an Everton team that should be performing better than they are, but which nevertheless has had some surprisingly poor results recently.

I never thought I'd find myself thinking this, because it's a competition I still have a lot of respect for, for all sorts of reasons (memories of Nelly Young and Yaya Touré, being at Wembley in 81, etc.,…), but I for one wouldn't actually be too sorry if we went out against Norwich in the Cup. If you look at our fixture list, it's just mad if we stay in all four competitions until into March. I just don't think it can be done. On the other hand, if we go out, it clears spaces for players to rest from time to time, and makes success in the other three competitions that much more likely.

Team? We can still put out a decent team, though, and rest vital players. I'd be thinking something like this:

Caballero

Zab (Maffeo if Zab still not quite fit) Otamendi Demichelis Clichy

Delph Fernandinho Fernando

Roberts Bony Iheanacho

Rested: Hart, Sagna, Mangala, Kolarov, Yaya, Silva, De Bruyne, Sterling, Aguero, Navas. That is not a joke team, in my opinion, it's still respectful of the opposition, and the fans that are making the long trip down, but still gives much needed breathing space to key players.

Shame. I like the FA Cup but we haven't got a cat in hells chance of competing on four fronts.
Also the dippers have almost got a 'bye' in their third round draw which means they will be able to rest most of their first choice players ahead of their league game with us the following Wednesday.
So definitely a second string side but if Pellers can send them out with a proper game plan and if they put in a shift who knows?
After all we've nothing to lose.

Hart
Zab otamendi mangala kolarov
Sterling Yaya Fernandinho De Bruyne
Silva
Aguero

I see what you're doing there, mate, so fair enough, we'll just have to agree to disagree. But let me ask you this. Would you play that exact same team on Wednesday night, as well? Presumably you would. Don't you think there'll come a point when the wear and tear will start to show, badly, in the performances of players like De Bruyne, Yaya, Ferny? (I know I've included Ferny in my line-up, but I've put two players next to him who get through a hell of a lot of work, although I'm not totally sure that Fernando is back to fitness). Granted that Sergio and Merlin don't necessary need resting, after long lay-offs — arguably they need the contrary, they need minutes on the pitch. But surely we've got to rest other players at some point? When would it be?

i'd probably put Navas in for Sterling for Everton, think too much is made of this 'rest' bollocks tbh, their professional athletes, its their job, some of the attitudes to this game are ridiculous, why not just give Norwich a bye? infact it might have been better if we had finished bottom of our CL group so we don't have as many games....ffs

Of course it is not a joke team. It would probably be one of the more expensive teams in the Premier League. Full of internationals and champions lge experience.

That team should comfortably win any tie against a likely under strength Norwich side.

I'd probably go with something like this:

Caballero
Zabaleta
Demichelis
Otamendi
Clichy
Fernando
Delph
Navas
Sterling
Bony
Iheanacho

This and as Norwich will almost certainly play a weakened side due to the shit they are in, I can see this side being good enough to win.

Because you've picked our strongest side for the Norwich game.
But we need to play that side in the two Everton games either side, which are much more important.
So you would have the same team playing three tough games in seven days?
Don't forget Everton will be well rested for the league game on the 13th.
