Looking at getting one for my 14 year old daughter for christmas but don't have a clue which one to get ! She would mainly use it for Internet and school work but are they any good ?? Any advice on which is a good one to get ?? Cheers

Not really, for any amount of work you need a larger screen and if she has music on facebook and microsoft apps the threads i bet are lower on a notebook so multitasking may not be as good.

A netbook really is for busy workers who travel a lot, not for a teenage girl. If she will be typing stuff up on it then defo get a lappy as squinting at the small screen on a netbook will mess her eyes up fast.

What is your price range matey ?

Netbooks are shit

Notebooks (aka laptops) are expensive

Take your pick

I'd consider a second hand or refurbished notebook from eBay, you need minimum 2GB RAM, 1.6GHz dual core 64bit processor, add in a dodgy copy of Windows 7, and that will handle everything you throw at it except games and Blu-Rays for less than £150. Second hand laptops are a bit of a false economy though as cheap laptops don't last long if you knock em about a bit, and laptops tend to get knocked about a lot. Thinkpad, Toshiba, Fujitsu-Siemens are usually a pretty safe bet and popular, so lots of good advice online when things start to go wrong. HP and Dell perhaps not so reliable, although the Elitebooks are fucking solid.

In fact if it were me, I'd buy her a small PC for her bedroom, much less chance of her breaking it / losing it / getting mugged / crippling herself and you get a lot more PC for your money than you do laptop and more chance of upgrading or fixing it when it goes wrong.

Was looking at going upto about £300 - £350 max . She has loads of music which will take up a lot of room !! Thanks

External 1TB USB hard drive, about £60

If your router has a USB port it'll probably share her music around the house.

My entire MP3 collection takes up 200GB and I've got about 3000 albums.

I'm after replacing Mrs Rep's laptop. she wants a 14.1 inch screen and uses it mainly for web and email. we have BT Infinity so I want to get the fastest one I can up to about £500.

can anyone help me withs specs etc?
You're confusing specs, broadband speed is nothing to do with your laptop.

For £500 you can get a new laptop that will last you 10 years - shame it'll probably break before that!

See above - Windows 7 will run perfectly well on a 1.6GHz dual core 32bit with 2GB RAM (although it's a bit sluggish). It's as fast as fuck on a dual 2.4GHz 64bit processor with 4GB RAM. Stick W7 on a PC with quad 3.8GHz i7 with 8GB RAM and your PC will be faster than you will ever need.

Incidentally, if you're wanting a laptop for gaming, you need an i7 and a £300 video card at the very minimum.

For the Daughter I recommend a Desktop Pc.
it will be easier to monitor what's happening on there and limit the amount of time she uses it easier.

The laptop - she'll become a zombie, constantly using it.

You can buy office clearance pc's on ebay for good prices, if it has to be new then avoid any high street retailer and have someone local like myself build it for you :)

As for the guy who's replacing the laptop for his mrs - if she won't be using it for office use and just web browsing look at getting a Tablet.
I recommend the Asus Eee pad Transformer

as you will have gathered, I don't know a great deal about this. If I can get 3.8GHZ and 8GB RAM that is more than enough and that 2 and 4 is the minimum?

-- Fri Oct 28, 2011 2:24 pm --

when looking at the processors they mention Intel i3,i5 and i7
WTF?
