York minster was extensively rebuilt after a fire a few years ago. I don’t remember any bureaucratic hold up. The Rose Window, a large intricate stained glass was painstakingly re built. A two hundred year old oak near me was felled for the purpose and the stump now carries a plaque to mark its contribution.
Can’t argue with your general point tho’.

I visited Westminster Abbey a few years ago, the same year when the poppies were around The Tower of London, so that would have been 2018. It was £17 entry fee then. For me who is completely fascinated by our history, it was worth every penny. I imagine these sites and lots of other businesses of course lost so much money during Covid lockdown and they why the entry fee has rocketed but let’s not go down that road.

You can get into Edinburgh castle for free. Just say you want to visit the war memorial and they escort you there. Can’t charge fowk to pay their respects.
