Honestly, I always took that as the signature chant of total no marks whose last claim to any kind of triumph was Palaeolithically distant. As the sincerest possible expression of embittered jealousy, I've always taken it as a kind of compliment.

I'd kind of of like us to take it up, as a matter of fact: “Champions of Europe, we'll never sing that”. Yes, I like it.
