off school sick and a penalty fine

Along a similar theme, my missus has a kid in her class who is off today, long weekend holiday, we know this because he told her on Friday. Mum has sent an email saying he has an 'asthma appointment' though and won't be in all day.

That kid definitely failed the brief he was given at home, to keep his gob shut!

ok,,,my daughter was off school from Monay -Friday a couple of weeks ago, we phoned school and told them she had spots on her back 'possible chicken pox' and we would keep her off, the spots started to clear up by the Thursday however we kept her off and she returned to school on the Monday ,so she had five days off,,Saturday a letter has arrived from school saying they believe we were on holiday 'which we were not' and they are marking her absence as without permision, this i believe triggers a penalty notice with the local council,,,can the school do this as they have no proof ? and it did not happen
As you've notified the school, and presuming they accepted your explanation as valid, then surely this is treated as an authorised absence.

At best they could request a doctor's note, however you would have expected this suggestion to have been made by the school during your conversation, as there wasn't a specific length of time discussed.

Sounds to me like a school mis-communacation/admin cock-up. I'd just give them a call to clarify. The school can't prosecute you - only the local authority can, so it's likely they'll not want to take this one any further.

write them a letter saying you believe they are a bunch of feckin clowns who are being paid to teach kids not wonder if a child was away on holiday or not. I would also find out who sent the letter and why the wasted time pursuing your business.

You keep your daughter off for a week without seeking medical attention. Really. Just pay the fine and stop wasting everybody's time having to read your bleatings.

did i say i did not seek medical attention, can you tell me where that is as i cant see it strangely enough? there is always an expert well done for the input,,''shakes head''

It did make me giggle and I wondered if you would bite. Now start using capital letters and stop bleating. Just kidding. :)

I suspect most of the replies on this thread are from people who don't have school age kids
My 15yr old was ill with bacterial tonsillitis 6 weeks ago,I took him to the doctors on the Monday, and took the note in school In the afternoon and told the attendance office he would be off all week according to the doctor, and she said ok
Tuesday morning my phone goes off,it's the school asking where my lad was,I explained, and put the phone down.

Wednesday morning same thing, apparently we have to ring in every morning to report his absence.
Ok I said my mistake, when will he be back in school the lady asked,
I was beginning to lose it then.
I repeated what I told the last teacher,

Ok Mr Dog because he will be off for 4 days,as part of the schools safeguarding policy we will be sending the attendance officer with the school police officer to check on him

Don't bother I said he's been told not to answer the door
That's ok she said we only need to see him through the window

But you are coming to check on his welfare, how can you do that without speaking to him,how do you know he's not under duress,or tied to the radiator,or are you only coming to check we are not on holiday
She put the phone down on me.
10 mins later the next link in the chain rang me,as I had upset the last one,

I repeated myself again, but this time she agreed with me about checking up on home visits, anyway she said the visit had taken place in the last 20 mins, and because he wasn't seen by them she now had to inform GMP

At this I said can you make sure it's after 6pm,as his mum would be home as well
I don't control the police Mr Dog she said,
Well clearly you do,as you've sent one to my house within 30 mins of the first phone call

610 pm
The police call at the house, not the neighbourhood policeman, but 2 tough looking lads, both looked like ufc fighters, but with guns
After we had explained the whole story, they were fuming with the school for being sent out,I thanked them both for coming.
It proves the system works, but I doubt anyone would have got the speed of response I got

So even though we had given them a doctors note and we have done the right thing in the first place,I still feel like a criminal

It's all about attendance figures according to the police

Sorry to go on a bit

Do they hire a cherry picker if you live in a fifth floor flat.
