Official - City end interest in Eto'o [merged]

Re: Samuel Eto'o [merged]

To be honest, I can't see the point in holding a press conference to say that you are accepting the status quo and staying at Barca. That's hardly worth holding a press conference for. Also, why is it tomorrow and not today? If the decision has been made, why hasn't it been announced already? For my money, it all seems to be delaying tactics so we can announce all the new signings at the same time on Wednesday.

All these big money transfers seem to hit some sort of glitch along the way. Personally... regardless of the outcome, the club has made another statement of intent. Same with the Kaka deal... we've been on the back pages of most newspapers for a while now, and everything that is written, good or bad, will raise the profile of the club.

yeah but sooner or later we have to close one of the deals or we will look like *****.

But we have done.

We've already got Barry and RSC.. and by all accounts Tevez.. they are all raising the clubs profile, and the more we are linked with without us actually coming out and saying we're after them.. the better.

I wonder if the club are far more clever than we give them credit for?.. I mean, we book a pre-season tour to Africa, and just happen to sign one of the top African players just before we get out there!

Re: Samuel Eto'o [merged]

Big money transfers to England in recent years have always been trouble some.

Look at Ronaldinho,

Shevchenko took years

Kaka, to Chelsea, kaka to us.

Robinho to Chelsea.

Now Eto'o to us.

It just isnt an easy thing to pull off and if we do manage it then everyone involved deserves some serious credit.

yeah but barry and rsc are'nt exactly "superstars" if you know what i mean. Tevez is a higher level but we aren't dealing with a club which may make it slightly easier. if you look at ronaldinho and kaka and now possibly eto'o if this deal collapses too we are going to look stupid and then it becomes increasingly more difficult to sign these big big names .

Re: Samuel Eto'o [merged]

I don't know what to think of this! Just put £50 on Eto'o to stay at Barca and if he comes its probably worth th £50, if he doesn't, it softens the blow :)

The funnny thing is though, not one person from the club has said anything.

Yes were in for Samuel. Hughes was talking to the media in January about Kaka and the club was beating their chest a bit about the whole thing. I havnt heard a word from anyone in the club in the media since RSC. Its funny how the media etc feel they can say "City cant sign player a, or player B", when the club hasnt necessarily been running around telling everyone we would sign Eto'o.

If we don't sign him this will have a mega long term effect. No superstar will consider us for a couple of years

I'm more than happy to wait a couple of years, having waited 30 already.

We're building for the future, not for tomorrow morning.

Granted, i meant to put at least at the end. But we can't afford to keep doing this. I think laporta knew what he was doing and was trying to force his hand

I know what you mean, we could be made out to look amateurish by the press. However, despite the ITK information, other club's/agent's statements, and Sky Sports New's constant groundless guesswork, our club have actually said nothing on the matter.

The press have spun our transfer dealings into some kind of circus act, where we bid for everyone, and get no one. I'm not saying we haven't bid for Eto'o, but that Real, Barca, Milan, the scummers etc. are regularly reported as having bid for countless players, who end up 'rejecting' them. The fact is that, despite all our cash, we've still only got a decent squad, and no recent success, so the press can beat us with that proverbial stick over and over again.

If the above teams fail to sign a player, they aren't accused of punching above their weight, ruining football etc. as they're all part of the favoured 'elite'.

It might take a few years to build a squad to compete, and then to attract such players, which in turn will reduce the amount of crap we get from the press. I for one am willing to wait.
