Offside rule changed after Silva's goal against Villa

Maybe ive missed it in the "conversation"...but whats the difference to intercepting a back pass, for example?

An attacking player can be in an offside position and a defender can pass it back to the keeper, the attacker can intercept and score.....why is one allowed and not the other?
Who knows anymore? They just make it up to suit the history clubs.

Funny how Villa’s goal against Newcastle will still stand though, which in my opinion is much worst.
Rodri is clearly offside, Mings is looking right at him before he turns and controls the ball, so he could have quite comfortably left the ball completely.
Whereas the Newcastle defender had no idea the Villa player was offside cos he was behind him and the offside was a much tighter decision, so he’s forced to try to intercept or clear the cross.
“Interpretation” that’s us fucked then : )

I was about to say that ! Watkins was off side until the Newcastle defender tried to clear than Watkins was played on side. But really the defender had to try and clear it, unlike Ming if he knew the rules could have let it run to his keeper

Jesus, how many times have we seen the like of that goal ffs? Leave the rule alone, it was implemented correctly, maybe in future it'll make braindead defenders think twice about trying to twat about with the ball when there is danger present.

And Rodri didnt recieve it from his own team...he won it off Mings

I still dont get it :-/

What they’re saying is that Mings didn’t have the opportunity to fully control the ball before the challenge came in. He hasn’t deliberately played the ball to Rodri. He’s deliberately played the ball in terms of chesting it but not to the opposition.

I’m not saying I’m in agreement with it, just what the logic is. It’s why you also see it when defenders control the ball, a player coming back from offside nicks it off them before it’s played again and they are given for offside too. It’s a law that is currently very inconsistently applied.

So if we were to go back to the point where Mings controls the ball with his chest,(if we use the new rules) how long before Rodri can be involved in play without being classed as offside?
Yes this is now a grey area. The replay showed that Rodri collected the ball from Mings when he knocked it sideways after chesting it down. It wasn't a tackle or challenge. So where is the line drawn? Rodri was in an onside position when he actually got the ball.
