Watson was magnificent. My favourite player when I first started going to City as a young kid. The header against Ipswich was a real bullet, and it was a vital one as well. Basically, Ipswich were third in the league and we were second with the end of the season nearing. It was 1-1 late on when he headed that one in, and by beating them we effectively removed Ipswich from the title race.
Remember Doyle less clearly as he was injured during in the 1976/77 season, and found it hard to get his place back from Tommy Booth the following year, eventually being sold to Stoke. I do, though, remember my Piccadilly Radio Soccer Annual 1976 featuring a piece entitled 'Doyle of England' in which he spoke about how proud he was finally to have won a cap having been overlooked throughout his long career up to that point.
Can't find Watson's goal against Ipswich on youtube, sadly. It was definitely televised - pretty sure it was on the Granada Kick Off Match on the Sunday and was on a 200 MCFC goals video that Granada issued in the late 1980s or early 1990s.
In its absence, here's another piece of classic Dave Watson for those who never saw him. The game is at home to Leicester in January 1997, which we won 5-0 with Kiddo scoring four. Watch out for Watson's part in Kidd's third goal, City's fourth. "Quite majestic," enthuses Barry Davies, and seldom did a City player deserve that description as much as Watson.
