IFFHS have released statistics for the past 12 months which show Manchester City have made a big improvement on their world club ranking in the past 12 months. Last January the Premier League club were in 40th position but 12 months on they are now placed 16th in the list.

The statistics released by IFFHS are made up via a points system in which clubs pick up points for wins or draws in their domestic and continental competitions. The number of points available is judged on how competitive the competitions are that each club has to play in. The Premier League is ranked as one of the top leagues and therefore Manchester City were able to gain the maximum points for a win or a draw. The club finished 2nd in the Premier League last season and reached the FA Cup final.

Manchester City’s improvement in Europe this season has also been a major contribution to them rising up the rankings in the last 12 months. Manuel Pellegrini’s side have qualified for the knock out stages of the Champions League for the first time in their club’s history which has brought them valuable ranking points. Manchester City picked up five wins and just one loss in the group stages finishing on level points with title holders Bayern Munich.

Despite improving on their placing they are still only the 4th ranked team in England. Chelsea currently lead the way with an overall position of third, followed by Tottenham Hotspur (7th) and then Arsenal (12th). However there is consolation as local rivals Manchester United have suffered due to their poor season under new manager David Moyes and are ranked a lowly 30th. Despite winning the Premier League title under Alex Ferguson last season the appointment of Moyes has yet to prove successful which has badly affected the club's ranking.
