Okay people adopting a Cat?

Leave him alone and wait until he comes to you,it's scary for him at the moment
Playing is a great way to bond, get a mouse on a string that has a wooden handle so it's nowhere near your hands
Also provide a high place it can go up on,they like to watch you from a place of safety until it settles in
Some take a while to bond others settle straight away, silva was on my lap within an hour of coming home so i was lucky there
If he is attacking your hand when you stroke him then stick to stroking the top of his head and under his chin and don't stroke his body for now and just do it when he comes to you, don't try and force contact
He will settle

a is just cruel - he bites his own dogs!

I agree with Karen. We've got three cats and whilst two of them are happy to let you stroke them pretty much anywhere, the other will go for you if you go anywhere south of the neck, and we've had her for 5 years.

Sounds like my wife.

You need a bit of variety when adopting a cat. I've a grey cat that doubles up as a baby elephant :-P
