Would have been a proper classy ground.

Maine Road was a right state when we left it, and half of it was newer than the Etihad is now.
I remember this well. In the circumstances of our resources at the time, and the fact it was pre-Hillsborough, it was a pretty well conceived development, although inevitably under Swales, conspicuously not executed, the ‘private boxes’ being a case in point. Think their location would have been terrible in terms of the view. Also not sure where you would get the food etc… in there. Only conceivable way is a lift at one end of the Main Stand or the other, as getting access via a gantry at the rear along the roof from back to front seems logistically challenging, especially given how close the furthest back seats in the Main Stand were to the new roof.

I seem to remember some boast about the Main Stand roof, at the time it was built, being able to withstand a huge amount of snow being deposited on it, which has to be one of the bizarrest football development boasts ever!

I was a regular at the Junction until I moved to Coventry in 1978.

The landlord, John Holt (no relation) was a bit of a miserable type but kept a good pint. That could be a problem with Holt’s beer as it was undrinkable unless it was well looked after.

One of our friends used to run a youth theatre project in Manchester. He would sometimes bring local minor TV celebs to the Junction. One time there was a rumour that Paula Wilcock was due to visit the pub.

The landlord’s wife, a bit worse for the drink, burst into the bar and demanded to know with a classic Spoonerism ‘Where is this Waula Pilcock then!’
John holts wife was carol. Raging piss head

Is that where the piss taking came from? Because Swales was always coming out with stuff like, "We've got the tallest floodlights in England" "Our pitch is the widest in Northern England"

Can't remember any others.
