Old Maine Road photos thread

I'm guessing Derek Jeffries

City played at Stamford Bridge three times in 70-71, but that looks like Ian Bowyer at the back, who scored in the FA Cup victory but didn't feature in the other games.
Yes it's Jeffries was at that cup game won 3-0 also back at Stamford bridge not long after to see us lose 1-0 1st leg Cup winners cup semi final.

I will try and get my scanner working so the pics I have will be better quality. I did post some of The Kippax few years ago (one of which the club stole and used on the Official Website when doing a history of the stand...... https://www.mancity.com/news/first-team/first-team-news/2019/april/the-kippax-25-years-ago-today ), but I have just found this pic too, which brings back some memories.

I recall when we last played in Europe in the late 1970's, fences were put up for the matches, but then taken back down for league games. Things changed and then the fences stayed up for good. The thing I always wondered about, is why there was no fence ever put up on the main stand as per this pic, taken around 1985ish, was it because us pond life in the North Stand and Platt Lane could not be as trusted as the posh folk in the Main Stand?

That’s a really good point!

Once went to the front of the Kippax when the fences were up and was struck by how badly they obscured the view and moved back up to the middle straight away. I wonder what the casualty rate would have been at Hillsborough if they weren’t in situ and I wonder how different football grounds would look today if that had been the case in 1989.

It was at Everton when the team ran out wearing the red n black shirts, took every Blue by surprise and immediately started chanting “we don’t want red”

IIRC
We booed thinking it was Everton coming out first then twigged it was City, started cheering, then "We don't like red".

For Atletico away I learnt a bit of Spanish. Favourite phrase was "Tengo una camisa en roja y negra". I have a red and black shirt. Still got it.

The Kippax fence was a little different from the North Stand fence.......it is an awful look and totally spoiled the beauty of The Kippax!

It’s mad but I long to be back under the dark roof and smell of piss in the old kippax stand

Just loved the character and belonging of Maine Rd
Wouldn’t it be amazing to watch a game from the old Kippax like Liverpool in 2019, Villa in 2022 or Arsenal in 2023. Imagine what the atmosphere would have been like. Imagine the mayhem. As much as I love the Etihad, and as much as life moves on, that would have been an unbelievable thing to experience.

Honestly, you;re bang on.
Cigarette smoke billowing around the streets as you made your way to entrance, with the upgrade to cigars at Christmas!
The smell of burgers, hot dogs and onions and the guy with the billboard asking you to repent your sins!

And finally a ground full of people who cared about the result!

Dirty burgers
