Old Transfers

Does anybody know what we paid in transfer fees (if any) for Ken Mulhearn, George Heslop and Tony Coleman in the 60's?

Coleman cost £5,000 from Doncaster Rovers.

Heslop cost £25,000 from Everton.

Mulhearn came from Stockport in a straight swap for Alan Ogley.

TC cost £12,000.

I thought Mulhearn was a cash plus Ogley deal tbh but can't recall the exact amount.

The Press Reports at the time said £5,000 for Coleman. I amnot aware if there were any add-ons to the fee.

I don't think anything was ever revealed about the Ogley-Mulhearn deal. If anyone paid any cash it would have been City.

All the transfer fees for the Championship winning side were publicised. And a real bargain it turned out:

Lee cost £60,000 from Bolton.
Bell went for £45,000 from Bury.
Summerbee was signed from Swindon for £35,000.
Heslop £25,000 from Everton (Reserves).
Coleman £5,000 from Doncaster.
Book was signed from Plymouth for around £25,000?
Mulhearn arrived from Stockport in a player exchange.

Oakes, Pardoe, Young, and Doyle all came through the youth system.

Most of the other players used that season came through the Youth system including David Connor, Harry Dowd, Paul Hince, Stan Bowles, and Joe Corrigan.

Bobby Kennedy made three appearances and cost £45,000 from Kilmarnock. Stan Horne also made one appearance and may have cost a transfer fee from Aston Villa.

The players would have wished that it was that high.

The year City won the Second Division in 1966, the basic wage was under £20 a week. There was a win bonus of £2 and a draw bonus of £1.

The only thing that could really pump up the wages was crowd bonus. This would kick in over a certain level (maybe 25,000). I recall that this would boost the wages of the players to over £100 in a good week.

The rags paid over 100 grand Denis Law 6 years before we won the league in 68 and Alan 'sniffer' Clarke cost £150k a month after the 4-3 win on Tyneside.
