Olivia’s killer guilty - Minimum of 42 years

Legalising drugs takes away the power of the criminals and you invest the tax gained into rehabilitation instead.

Lots of ex police agree legalising drugs is the way forward. Like prohibition in the States banning and criminalising such just doesn't work. Once something is out there it's not going away and somebody will always provide it.

The strict sentences in South America do fuck all to prevent it, there will always be criminals who use desperate people as runners they are indispensable to them. Legalising is the only logical way to combat it. But it isn't an election winner so won't be touched.

The majority of prisons in America are privately owned and big business. A bit of weed can get you five years and it keeps the profit going. Shaun Attwood on YouTube has done some excellent videos on the war on drugs. The Clinton's were heavily involved and making lots of money out of it

well said

It's just the same clichés after any awful incidences... ''this country is f*cked'' , soceity is broken'' people were saying this back in the 60's/70's
That’s not to say these incidents are wrong, worrying and as a country we need to look to reduce them

Weed is legal in a lot of States now

Society is on a slope so aggressively downwards by the time the wisest of our generation actually wake up, we'll be long fucked. All our data is hoarded by big boys, our children are mass "educated" by algorithms on the phones they love now more than anything. Our government is practically non-existent and as effective as a limp dick, drug abuse not controlled by decriminalisation and substances that should have been controlled are let loose for everyone. I see no change coming, only a certain decay.

I am very disappointed in our species, our leaders, our course and our lack of respect towards our environment and the new generation that's coming. I have no hope with it, and I'm 29. It sickens me to hear of such cases, but I'm not surprised anymore.

Help bring forth the very change that you want to see ...everyone has a duty to do their part, no matter how tiny or large that is!

A fair few old boys near me go out in the afternoon and are back home by 8pm before things get too lively
That pretty much sums me up too, even though I don't live in a particularly rough area there are still too many dickheads about in the late evening. It probably sounds daft but compared to the 70s I feel safer now having a drink in a pub before an away match than going out to a pub locally in the late evening.

Isn't most drug crime centred around class A drugs though? Are we going to legalise crack, meth and heroin?

We are trying to get rid of tobacco how are we going to decriminalise hard drugs?

A good read, there is no perfect solution but it's a hell of a lot better than what we do currently.

The thing is once something is out there it's not going away. Criminalising it isn't going to stop people wanting or getting it. Being able to legally buy it stops the criminals having the monopoly and using violence and intimidation to keep that monopoly. Decriminalising buying and having it frees up police time, courts and prison cells. When ex drug officers advocate this approach you know it's sensible, that's the reason it will never happen.

I appreciate your optimism, I still have belief in us, in my peers and my family. But let's be honest here, the democracy we're being sold is non-existent, and the fail-safes around our societies are gone.

Think about the food you consume, the products you use, the data you give out regularly even though you don't want to.

I can be as good as I can, so can you, but the times that being good solved issues is long fucking gone.

That will probably be because you know there will be a large police presence around. Walking out of a local pub and waiting at a bus stop at 11pm there won't be.

Some comments in here about the police are inappropriate, and especially during this time.

Their so called efforts to investigate some bottles hitting our bus can not be held in the same context as to the focus on the murder investigation of a 9 year old girl
