On this date in 1970....

I remember it well.

It was a fine day (to start with) and we went to the ground early and had a ride on the big wheel that featured in the Harry Lime film. I had not taken a coat as the weather looked so good.

The stadium was virtually all open terracing. That was OK in the first half but in the second half there was a deluge. I can't ever recall being as wet as that.

It was a great night celebrating after going back to the hotel to change out of my soddened clothes.

Correct me if I am wrong but this day was the same day Chelsea beat Leeds in the FA Cup final replay and as you would imagine our rest day paled into insignificance in the papers the day after. ( Well according to my dad anyway )

Yes, the only European final featuring an English club that wasn't shown live on British TV, we had to make do with about 20 mins of highlights.

I was 15 at the time but had no chance of going because of the cost and upcoming O-levels.

Absolutely drenched the heavens opened during the game.
We hired a ford escort if my memory serves me correct and we had two designated drivers, stopped of in Brussels and also in Munich for a night and got well pissed.
Great memories of celebrating in Vienna after the game.

If you watch the replay at Old Trafford between Chelsea and Leeds Kenneth Wolstenholme actually mentions updates of the scoreline in Vienna that evening.

Great night. Poor game because of the conditions. Heavens opened second half.
Played in the massive open bowl that was the Prater Stadium in those days.
About 8 or 9 thousand if I remember rightly. Hardly any local interest. And barely 500 Gornik fans. Still a communist country then ofcourse. And they simply weren't allowed to travel.
Drove across Europe with 3 mates, in a Ford Anglia. Happy days.
Gornik were fortunate to make the final. Having still been level with Roma after a replay in the semi final, they advanced on the toss of a coin !!
