Original MCFC Maine Road Street Sign

Amazingly the reason it’s called Maine Road has just been explained on tv and is due to Maine, USA who introduced the first prohibition into the USA and a temperance movement in Manchester adopted the name Maine = Maine Rd. Just been on The Chase so it must be true.

The Chase? Pfft. Only lightweights appear on that. Eggheads is where the big hitters strut their stuff.

Arse

Remember reading something by Gary James that it was originally called Dog Kennel Alley or Lane and it was indeed renamed Maine Road after the temperance movement in Maine. There was a political group founded in Manchester whose aim was to outlaw drinking in the city.
Obviously, not the most successful political pressure group to have existed……..

To those developing the area, especially the Temperance leaders, the 'Dog Kennel Lane' name was seen negatively and so the selection of the name 'Maine Road' was made. Maine, due to the State's role in the Temperance movement, was viewed as a significant name and recognition of the movement

“Dad why does everyone in Maine wear Farah’s and Adidas Sambas?”

Where’s the source for this?
I’m sure someone, maybe @kerem the Istanbul lad, shared a graph that we put 10-15% on their currency in the week we were there. And that wasn’t inter, they all arrived day of the game. We did many days before and after and basically put their kids through school for the next year

The temperance movement was weirdly huge in the NW generally, and Manchester in particular, at the turn of the 1880s-1910s, so probably true
Contrast that to my post above

City fans drank more per head at the 1981 cup final, the replay (despite being outnumbered almost 2-1) and the 1999 play off final than anyone else at Wembley those years.including gigs

I worked close to the UK brewing industry for years and those numbers were true. A red in the trade used to sneer at me “that’s your parade, along with the tall floodlights”

Also broke records by volume at West Ham, spurs, leicester, leeds, bolton and liverpool in recent years apparently
The only rivals per head are Sunderland/Newcastle and West Ham
