Last night I did a free 1 hour long talk on the origins of City in Gorton 1880-1887 with the latest research and challenging some myths. I‘ve recorded it and you can watch it here for the next few days:

Thanks to everyone who joined in last night. There was a great response and it proved extremely popular. I’ll be doing other talks like these over the coming months, so if you’ve got any ideas of what you’d like to cover let me know. Thanks.

Thanks Gary. You do a fantastic job keeping the history of our club alive for future generations. I hope the club appreciates you as much as us fans do.

Really enjoyed this, would love to hear more about some of the key figures such a Joshua Parlby and early MCFC.
Thanks Gary.
I’ve got an article coming up on Parlby. Each Monday for next few weeks I’ve got a written article on some of the key early figures. Last Monday was Lawrence Furniss and Parlby is soon. Also, worth searching through my site like this search on name Parlby:

Lots of stuff on there about so many areas of MCFC history. Thanks.

Great as always @Gary James . Listened to it yesterday.

Love the detail on the early locations, am I right in thinking the St Marks church is gone? Where did that used to be?
In the talk I mention about the Shameless TV series… in the first series the area was used as their set and the parade of shops featured was approximately where the church was. It was demolished in the 70s and that area has been redeveloped again since. The stretch of Clowes St that passed the church became a walk named Gorton Villa Walk (ironically Gorton Villa was a rival FC to Gorton AFC though the walk wasn’t named after a football club!).

As part of the new redevelopment the street/walk has been remade as a new road called Beastow Road (named after William Beastow).

I love the patch of land which was probably Farmers Field is still there on Wenlock Way even though it is enclosed. Do men and women such as Beyer, Peacock, the Connells and Bearstow still exist to help the modern day Scuttlers? Has the Welfare State replaced people like these who did so much good for the people and Manchester in late Victorian times.

It does make you wonder. These people tried to create clubs, playing fields and so on but in recent decades sports grounds have been sold off and opportunities in areas of poverty have decreased. Those people all felt part of the community and saw it as their mission to help their neighbours - or so it seems. Obviously, we don’t know specifically what they felt but their actions are clear.

Makes you wonder dunt it,working class folk with nowt then, trying like folks now to make things better
for themselves and their neighbours, nowt changes.

I just re subscribed to Gary's website,£ 20 a year, Bargain.
I recommend it so highly to support him.
He should be Citys official historian.
Thanks for subscribing. It really is appreciated. I’m not employed by anyone and so anyone subscribing really helps pay the bill for the website and helps my research enormously. Thanks for that support.

As well as the £20 a year option there’s also a £3 per month which gives people a chance to sign up for a month and see what they think. If they don’t like it they can cancel of course.
