Origins of MCFC - video & latest research

I'm planning to do another MCFC online history talk in about 3 weeks like this one:

https://gjfootballarchive.com/2023/02/02/history-talk-video-the-origins-of-mcfc/

(free to download until Thursday morning).

Due to popular demand it was going to be about Josh Parlby & MCFC's birth BUT wondering if the 1905-06 illegal payments scandal may be of more interest. What does everybody think? Happy to do either and will make decision tomorrow so please leave your comments. Thanks.

Today (8 Feb) is the last day to watch this for free. From tomorrow it will only be available to subscribers, so have a watch while you can. Cheers.

The next talk will take place on 1st March and can be booked here:

Thanks Gary for all the great work you do on City, genuine question, do you ever feel like going on the Radio or TV to put our side of things when we get all the crap talked about us ie "Small club, no history, no fans" etc etc,
I know Dave Wallace from K of the K used to get asked to coment in the media but we dont seem to have anyone now putting our side of things & I can think of no one better than you with your knowledge of the history of our great club.

I’d be delighted to. I have been on radio & TV a few times over the years but don’t get asked much these days. I was once asked to go on Talksport a few years back about City ‘not having’ any European history. I pointed out that City had won a major UEFA competition years before Liverpool, Juventus etc and they ended up cutting the interview short!

Obviously, after doing my PhD on football history I think I’ve got a lot to say, backed up with academic rigour. I do get asked often by overseas broadcasters who seem much more willing to listen to an academic explaining about the history of Manchester football. Before the derby I did quite a bit for a TV show that was shown in Poland, Norway and a few other countries.

Sorry Gary I didnt realise you have done quite a bit of Media work, I suppose thats the trouble with stations like Talksport if they dont like what your saying or it doesnt fit in with there agenda you get short shrift & dont get asked back again,
Its a real shame you dont get asked to go on more uk media as it sounds like you do a great job of sticking up for city & putting a few people straight with the misinformation & outright lies they seem to spout on a daily basis,
I long for a uk media outlet that could have sensible conversations about football rather than all this "banter" that seems to be in fashion at the moment,
Anyway keep up the good work & lets keep our fingers crossed we get a good conclusion to the latest charges we are facing.

No problem at all. I’d love to do more but, of course, it depends on those in charge to decide who they want to listen to. I’ve always tried to speak the truth and challenge interviewers who come with an agenda I don’t believe to be true.

Ah well!

On the origins… for anyone who missed the talk I’ve written a free to read article covering a few of the main points here:

Reading that has just made me realise that we are all part of the history of this magnificent football club. Even if its only a small part. Thanks Gary.

Thanks to you for that too.

Every fan is part of the story. We all contribute in some way and without ‘us’ over the last 150 years there’d be no club. It’s also worth stating that no fan is bigger or better than another - we all contribute in some way. There used to be a big thing in the 80s about loyalty - only those Blues who travel to every game no matter where it is can be described as truly loyal I was once told BUT the fan who spends his last few quid buying his first match ticket has possibly contributed more of his wealth than the multi millionaire who can easily afford to take time away from his business has. It’s all relative.

Likewise, it’s important to recognise football moves on. I love seeing the next generation create their version of MCFC just like my generation created our version. History shows that the club never stays the same and that those who try to ensure it doesn‘t evolve are the ones who don’t ’get’ MCFC. MCFC is for all and we need to enjoy our bit of it. My research and writing isn’t for everyone, just like light shows may not be to everybody’s tastes. Personally, I’m just grateful when someone does show interest in my work but I’m even more grateful when I see new fans establish their version of City.

We all contribute to make our club develop.

Not a rant, but I hope I know where you're coming from, and you hit the nail on the head with that comment.
I'm struggling along with others, but City is my first and constant love.
And i will always support you for your labour of love.

Yes, it always bugged me when other fans didn’t realise the financial strain simply finding the Kippax admission was never mind the sums needed today.

How depressing but utterly predictable
