Our attack - what's off?

It’s all about taking chances!

We were no better in our general play against Chelsea or today and didn’t create that many open play chances in either game... but we just took our chances that did come.

Didn’t we have something like 26 shots at Leeds? That’s more than the Chelsea and today’s games combined, yet Chelsea and today ended up in a 7-1 total score line.

That early stretch of the season, our finishing was nothing short of fucking atrocious!

Once a team takes its chances, it can play with confidence and the opposition’s heads drop. When you don’t, it keeps the opposition in the game and that arrogant (in a good way) knocking the ball about doesn’t happen.

The team that can't score goals has the best goal difference in the league , surely not
Well, that’s what happens when you start scoring goals. Our GD was hovering around -1 as recently as November. More than ¼ of all of our goals up to Christmas were scored in one game against Burnley.

It’s very easy to forget how bobbins we really were in front of goal in the 2020 part of this 2020-21 season.

Second balls.

We weren't picking them up earlier in the season. Now we seem to pick everything up. You don't need to create big chances constantly if you are picking these up because you'll create a dozen half chances instead from them

agree , we needed to create 15-20 chances to get on the scoresheet its has improved but we are still not clinical enough missing a world class striker is a big part of the problem

It’s definitely improved, but even now I think there’s considerable improvements to be made in our front 3. It’s lovely to see us smashing in some class strikes but the magic that produced goals 1, 2 and 4 won’t happen in most games as it was exactly that... magical. And the other goal was a set piece. So I do think the attack is still short of where we would want it to be, though it is moving in the right direction. We’ll know our attack is back when we are creating and scoring more simple chances.

Matches like yesterday are rare where we are much more clinical in our finishing and we outperformed our XG by a lot. But for most matches our XG is always higher than the goals we have scored, which shows that our attack is fine and we are creating chances, but needs to be more clinical (consistently). I think we can only go forward especially with Aguero's movement upfront...
