IMO Stones is our best centre half. He is being played at RB due to injuries and because he’s better than any of the other central defenders there. Of the rest Ake and Akanji much of a muchness (very good), then Laporte and Dias based on this season.

Dias has been easily our worst CB this season imo... hasn't looked the same player since the Madrid collapse. He'd be the last choice as of right now.
Ake probably the best we have. Underrated terribly imo. A proper defender.

On this season alone ake and akanji comfortably. Laporte and stones both been injured but both looking like coming into form. Dias sadly has been miles off the boil and is a distance 5th right now.

On current form, Aké and Akanji; Dias a bit off it, Laporte feeling his way back, and Boulders largely untested at CB because playing (pretty well) out of position. At their best, Dias and Laporte.

John Stones is the best player at the club who is classed as a defender. He might not be the best defender, but he’s the best player of that group.

However, as already said, it’s very much horses for courses. Sometimes we need agility more than strength, others we need the best build up options.
We are blessed though as it doesn’t really matter which of the 5 start really.
When you see these FOOTBALLERS (not just defenders) play, your ranking is spot on.
Blasphemy though it may be, Dias feels a step behind the other 4 right now. If being gee’d up or barking out praise or going to ground to block a shot were worth more, he’d be Top Dog, but it’s so much more and the technical brilliance of Akanji & Ake have been absolutely superb this season, and Ake has been our most dangerous Centre Half at dead balls, too.
