This depends on what era you actually watched the team.
My Grandfather would definitely have said Max Woosnam.
My dad would say Frank Swift
My uncle would say Peter Doherty
My brother still argues for Neil Young

"Best" vs "favourite" for sure, but there's also a special category for "most important", & that for me only has two candidates, Fernandinho & Rodri.Best v favourite is probably an apt distinction here.
Best - not sure there's ever been a player for us who's been the best in the world in their position* before, never mind overall. So has to be Rodri
Favourite - Silva and probably will be until I die
*Kevin maybe a couple of years back

We've had to cope for periods without all the other greats, but the absences which affected us the most imo are Rodders & Fern, such was their crucial importance of knitting everything together.
Rodders couldn't have wished for a better teacher than the master of the dark arts, the Brazillian legend that is Fernandinho...
SIlva yes former and now current one. Frannie Lee ...what a playerYeah, I was raised on the Lee, Bell, Summerbee video that I think was the curriculum for blues in the 90s and never questioned Bell being the best until Silva
There are the three long-time historical legends who have to be up there:
Peter Doherty, Bert Trautmann and Colin Bell
There are the big three hitters of modern times who hit heights that nobody else ever has:
Kevin de Bruyne, Sergio Agüero and Yaya Touré
And then there is a group just below these names who also must be mentioned:
David Silva, Rodri, Kompany, Gündoğan, Bernardo Silva and Fernandinho
At the top of them all though, are my top two:
Kevin de Bruyne. I think his recent years of injuries have made many forget just how good he is.
Not forgetting his winning goal against Paris to put us in our first ever Champions League semifinals, his away goal at Chelsea when they were champions in the midst of our record winning run in 2017-18, his return from injury at home to Chelsea a few years ago, his dismantling of Wolves away on our run to the title in 2021-22, his performances and goals against Arsenal 1-3 and 4-0 to help us to the title in 2022-23, huge performances against United and Liverpool so many times over the years.
There’s a space just near Kompany’s statue where I think King Kevin’s statue will go.
And Sergio Agüero.
He scored so many big and important goals. Did it against everyone. He was United’s nemesis. He scored in the biggest games like the greatest ever PL game I’ve seen between City and Liverpool on the night we got back in the title race in 2018-19. The four sublime finishes against Leicester in 2017-18, the five he got against Newcastle in 2015. He was proper tough, a great competitor, people forget how fast he was, his finishing is pure ‘Jimmy Greaves’ level, always used to find that spot just inside the post like a postage stamp… and he was the king of thunderbastards, and he was a great dribbler.
Again, recent years of goalscoring from Haaland have made many forget just how good Kun was.
Gundog has been special in his own right, but imo he's never been best as a specialist No 6 for us. Ilkay came into his own when played as a No 8, albeit he could fill in as a 6 if needed.Ferna was fantastic from the start of 17/18 to February 2019 when he got injured. We had to play and win many games without him in that epic final part of the 18/19 season when we won the domestic Treble. Gundogan replaced him successfully. Rodri is on a different level. Some have been a bit slow to process how good Rodri was between 2022 and 2024. Best in the world.
Don't think you can have Rodri Haaland that high because we don't get those moments that legends are made of in terms of the football we play. Our best player of all time is KDB. I don’t think it’s that’s close. He does everything.
2. Rodri
3. Haaland
4. Yaya
5. Silva
6. Bell
7. Aguero

We saw what happened in the CL Final when both Fern & Rodders were inexplicably left on the bench for Gundog, & we suffered as a result.
Even Pep has conceded he made a selection error in that game. We should've never started with Sterling, Zinchenko & Gundog as a No 6 & we paid the price. That game still ranges me...
What! Haha heard it all now.Yaya doesn’t sniff the top 5 in all honesty.
I respect the opinion of those who disagree but for me he wasn’t even a top 3 player of his specific side.
KDB, Silva, Kun, Kompany, Rodri, Bell plus probably Trautmann, Haaland and Lee would all be above Yaya.
