in a way i agree with what you just said........but to answer the OP's question i think he just went for goal not a cross

I've watched it a few times and I'm still not sure. He may have "hedged his bets" today, and done what a lot of players do these days, namely whip in a cross that is aimed at (not across) the goal. That way, if someone (attacker or defender) gets a glance on the ball or even if they don't, you're bringing the possibility of a goal into the equation.

If it was a cross, he would have hit it with more pace and less control.

A cross follows a line. A shot picks a point.

It was top corner all the way.
