In the end he replicated his barca trío. Dinho did a more athletic busquets Silva a not quite as brilliant Xavi and Kev was iniesta. In retrospect not a surprising choice. Was never going to value brawn over football intelligence. I applaud him for that.

Was definitely surprised when I saw the team sheet but especially once Gundogan is healthy I do not at all expect Pep to play that midfield. I would assume Kev, Gundogan, and Fernandinho will be the trio unless there is another name coming in.

I'd have Gundogan, Fernandinho and Silva with KDB taking Nolito's place.

I was wondering the opposite - whether he'll move Fernandinho to RB when Gundogan is fit again. In possession, it looks as if that is a midfield position anyway...

Not vs all teams, obviously, but that could be amazing to see

I think this will be played a bit.
It suits us well.

Sagna did look at little awkward yesterday compared to Clichy. He's a brilliant defender though and an intelligent player, so he'll improve.

I think it was a bit of a hybrid of Bayern and Barcelona. The midfield trio like Barcelona's but the full backs like Alaba and Lahm. The full backs provided width at Barca, wingers at Bayern.

Yesterday we had wingers providing the width, ball players dictating play. Full backs tucking in to solidify centre mid when we lost possession.

I can't wait to see us after a year.

I'm not sure about the Silva/KDB partnership. Both of them want to play the killer pass or assist and whilst I originally thought the two of them would be a match made in heaven, a season later I'm yet to see them click.

If we persist with using our full backs as midfielders, then a congested midfield is crying out for Yaya. The guy has been a legend but I'd written him off at the end of last season. He can no longer cover the hard yards but in Peps new packed midfield nobody passes a ball or sees an opening better than Yaya. The fact he also gives us height and physicality shouldn't be overlooked.

Pep's new systems could give Yaya another two years of winning trophies at City. The only downside is it would come at the cost of Silva or KDB.

I'd ignore last season under Pellegrini re: Silva and KDB.

It's a long season, I'm sure Yaya will play there quite often - if he stays

I thought Yaya would be long gone after last season but in Pep's new formation Yaya may be the main man once again.

No passengers allowed in Pep's team. Yaya is still brilliant on the ball. But not off the ball. Pep said as much. This is his final season if he stays. And he probably won't get much playing time if he does.

I don't see KDB doing much off the ball either. Silva made a few attempts yesterday but it's clearly not his game. I think the distances for Yaya to cover will be much less under this system and I think it negates Yaya's weaknesses more than anyone else's.
