After the season has ended, I wanted to say something positive about Matheus Nunes. Cup Final aside, Manchester City finished strongly. In the Premier League, we went on an unbeaten run winning 9 out of the last 12 league games, and I found myself increasingly thinking Nunes played well.
We signed Nunes 2 years ago from Wolves for £53m, and I never understood why. I wrote him off almost immediately. He had done very little for Wolves, and for about a season and a half he did very little for City. He would regularly play quite poorly, and gift possession away, a trait that culminated in the 'tackle' at the Etihad Derby this season.
Nunes has come back from the dead. He has 1 goal and 6 assists in 19 starts plus 7 sub. app. for City. That's decent. I am not claiming that he is a top quality player, but the way he is developing, he might become one. Nunes is deceptively quick, he can dribble , and make a good cross. The right back position suits him. At last he looks like he is enjoying football and that he wants the ball. I give him a lot of credit for coming back from a low point of the Etihad derby. He still has a habit of switching off and losing concentration but he is proving himself to be a very useful player. His form in the closing weeks has been such that I am now uncertain as to whether we need to buy a right back. The way he is going he could conceivably develop into a Premier League right back, at the very least he is a good squad player. I would be interested to see how he would play in midfield now that he is playing with some confidence.
The only other City player who you might argue has improved this season is Doku but if you look at Doku's goals and assists they are pretty much identical to the previous season.
Well played Nunes. I think Nunes can look back on his season with pride because he showed good character; his performances improved in an alien position, and in a side that was struggling emphasising the point.
My best young player was O'Reilly.
Best signing: Marmoush.
POTY: Haaland. Other candidates Gvardiol and Dias.
