I've been think about our squad, especially with a manic summer transfer window looming. I think our squad is great, there's only a couple weaknesses that can easily be rectified (apart from one which is slightly harder: attacking midfielder).
I think Mancini will find the players and sort out our tactics though!

So anyway, slightly long post but please have a read through.
(A summary for those who’s too lazy: It’s great but I think we need a attacking midfielder and a left back plus possibly a right midfielder!)

Let's see if we can get a nice long thread with some intelligent and proper discussion going!

Goalkeeper: Shay Given will hopefully be ready for next season. He does have some weaknesses but he's saved us more times than I care to remember. I hope during pre-season Mancini will take a real good look at Hart and Given then make a choice who will be number one and stick with whoever of the two he picks. As third choice Taylor is very dodgy, perhaps we could sign Fulop, he's decent and doesn't seem to mind warming benches?
I also hope Gunnar Nilsen gets a run in cup games etc, would be great to see him some more.

Left Back: I honestly think we need a player here: a true "Brazilian-style" fullback. Young with plenty of pace. Balanced player who's equally good defending as going forward. Ideally should be able to overlap and put in quality crosses.
I don't think Bridge is good enough. He's not quite fast enough and he seem to let people put in far too many crosses. Garrido is young but I'm not quite convinced yet.

Right Back: Keep faith in Zaba! Think how much he's improved under Mancini this season, with even better players and longer for Mancini to influence him, how knows how good he'll become? If anything we need more Argentines in our side not less.

Centre Backs: I honestly don't see the need for signings here. Kompany is amazing and will only get better. Pair Kompany with a fully fit Lescott and we've got a fantastic pair. Toure if he keeps improving and becomes a better alternative. Then of course there is the exciting Boyata which has looked a huge prospect when he's played.

Right Midfield/Wing: I like Johnson and I think we should trust him. I'll concede he's been less impressive against top sides but he's only been here for 6 months. He's very young and I think he'll improve rapidly under Mancini.

Left Midfield/Wing: Is Bellers leaving? Who knows... I can see SWP getting the boot/leaving though. Either way there's a lot of quality right-footed midfielders who can cut in, fairly easy position to replace. Could even go for someone British, shouldn't need an exotic import!

Defensive Midfielder: De Jong is the man for me, when he's on top form he's one of the best at his role. Sweeping up and protecting the back four, hounding and tackling. There is a reason he's consistently picked for Holland you know?
I actually would like Vieira to stay on for one more season, then perhaps after 2011 he could be integrated on the coaching side. I've got a strong feeling he'll one day become a fantastic coach/manager!
Now Barry I don't know, I've been slightly disappointed. I probably just had very high expectations as he was fantastic for Villa for so many seasons. With Villa he seemed to command the midfield, drive attacks forward and help defend. He was a bit “box to box” but for us he’s been a bit of everything but not inconsistent and never been instrumental to our attacking play. I’d LOVE nothing more than for him to have a blinding second season, I’ll happily eat humble pie!

Attacking Midfielder: For me the big absolute top priority. If we can get the right type, he could link up midfield and attack thereby allowing Tevez to stay higher up. This season Tevez has performed a lot better when he doesn't need to track all the way back to the centre circle to get the ball.
I don't know if we need a "box to box" player as De Jong seems capable of covering our back-line, but at the same time we can't have someone like Robinho with not one defensive fibre in his body. Genuinely "box to box" midfielders are extremely rare and I'd dare to say that most players who get put in this category isn't actually a box to box player. We shouldn't be to hung up on this box to box concept. It's much more important that he needs to be able to make great forward runs and passes. Drive the midfield forward whilst still being mindful to the defensive side of things.

Strikers: If we could get someone amazing like Torres or Villa then yes please.
I do however think we should give the Tevez-Ade partnership a real chance. If we sort out the midfield they'd be able to stay closer together on the pitch. I know Ade has had some sub-par performances but I believe in him, especially if you look at some of the stellar games he's had for us. This has been the toughest year he's ever had to go through: injured, banned and then the Angola tragedy. He's a quality striker, at least give him to January then we could buy someone if it's not working out.

excellent and well thought out post mate. One thing I have to disagree with is the Ade-Tevez partnership. Both like to roam so much and who would you rather let roam, the striker who has scored around 30 goals this season or the striker who has half that amount and who's work rate on the pitch is questionable to say the least (although he is improving in this aspect a lot nowadays). We need one player who will just stay in the box and get on the end of things.

Not necessarily a target man because with inside out wingers theres one thing that is a given and that quality crosses won't really be coming consistently to warrant a target man in there so that renders the excellent yet extremely injury prone (and thus useless) santa cruz pointless. We need to get a man who will just hunt in and around the 6 yard box a la Ruud and just get poach and finish them all they long. Obviously David Villa would be ideal but that's not happening....probably.

Agree about the attacking mid, think we need to go to a diamond formation and have de jong as the defensive fulcrom and then give stevie ireland one more shot at being the top of that diamond and just giving him the role to just create and sit rather than drive into the box a la the stevie of yester year when we really needed his goals. We need his creative influence now more than his goals.

Great post there. Agree with alot of what you said but as Moona says about the tevez and ade partnership is correct. Poacher is wat we need!!

So left back, attacking midfielder (not sure about ireland now guys) and a poaching striker!!

Who would you bring in for them positions?

Here was my take a few days ago:

For me, the target as always is to go as far in the trophies as possible and to finish as high as possible. With obviously a champions league finish and a trophy being the main priorities. I think getting that first trophy is key to removing the Typical City tag that still remains in some people's thinking. I also think that Mancini should be given the whole season, as well as the oppurtunity to sign the players he wishes, and sell the players he wises to.

As for the team, now we have a decent squad in place it won't be the scatter gun approach in the summer but simply improving positions that NEED improving. It will be a much more tactical summer and given the circumstances we are now in, we should be looking to comfortably hit the 70 point mark next season with a confident, fast, good footballing side. For me, i think we still need to look at drastically improving the side. We should have a team that is capable of playing both 4-4-2 and 4-5-1 comfortable in order to be able to match anybody in any circumstances.

The 4-4-2:

--------------------- Given ---------------------

[New] ------ Kompany ------ Lescott ----- [New]

Johnson ----- Barry/De Jong --- [New] --- [New]

-------------- Tevez -------- [New] -------------

Goalkeeper
Shay gets alot of stick at times, but for me he is a quality keeper and easily good enough to be in a team wanting to be challenging for the title, just look at Fabianski! While his ability to come off his line could be improved, there are few shot-stoppers like him around and to bring in another keeper who can catch, may mean taking a hit on his ability to make a world class save.

Defence
I think a right-back and a left-back are essential. Jerome Boateng rumours look a step in the right direction but i think our centre-backs take some heavy stick that perhaps is undeserved at times. That said, most fans began to see the Kompany/Lescott partnership really starting to produce a solid line and when accompanied by some quality full-backs i think we will see a much more solid defensive unit next season.

Midfield
I think a Creative midfielder will perhaps be our most important signing this summer. Get this signing right and already the team looks 100% better. In a 4-4-2 system with Barry OR De Jong accompanied with a creative midfielder and then for a 4-5-1 system playing both Barry AND De Jong with a creative midfielder. I also think the left midfield will need a new winger to come in. While Bellamy has had a fantastic season, i really don't see it being repeated, does anybody else? He will be 1 year older and probably won't be able to play as many games. He would be an excellent impact sub, mind. I think a winger who can play on both sides to switch with Johnson is key, hopefully lightening fast with a good cross on him.

Striker
For me last night was all about Crouch v Adebayor. There was only one winner. Crouch won everything, Adebayor won nothing. While i think Adebayor is a useful player and should be 1 of the 3 top strikers the squad should have. He is not even in the same league as Tevez and for a target man, he can't half mis-time when to jump. For me, a striker who really knows where the net is to accompany Tevez would also make the team look 100% better. This would allow Tevez/Adebayor/[New] to rotate.

Also good post Blue coop.

But i kinda like zabba at right back also! agree with everything else you say tho!

At left back there really aren't many options out there, I'd plump for getting in manuel figueroa from Wigan. Looks a very decent player on his day but don't know if he's good enough to be honest.

Attacking midfield I doubt we could tempt Ozil away from Werder just a year after them losing Diego so I'd go for the marginalised Van der vaart.

Poacher, my heart says someone Italian. But my head remembers rolando bianchi, if we were to go italian then i wouldn't mind taking a gamble on Alberto Gilardino. Although the club are meant to be looking at the clinical oscar cardozo from benfica.... Hmm would be a decent option. First choice would be Edien Dzeko though but I don't think we have a chance in hell. Klass Jan Huntelaar anyone??

Looking for a poacher? I thought he would have a good year, I also think he is by no means the finished article. He has a lot of heart too. Been insulted by Redknapp, to a much lesser extent Capello, though i believe its phycology, and by most fans. I think Darren Bent would be fantastic.
Not the stellar signing you are looking for, but have alook at his record over the last 5 years playing with crap.

Only 26 YOA.

The rest I agree leave alone for another year.

Goalkeepers.
We can't have Gunner Nielsen play in the cup games, we haven't won anything so we need to field our strongest side at every each we get to win a trophy. Hart/Given. Let them fight the number 1 spot out. I would give it Hart as he has proved at Birmingham he has been very good.

Left back/Right back
Our current one's ain't strong enough to be able to help us push on to the champions league. Bridge/Zabba/Richards/Ned in my eyes are squad players.

Centre halves
Lescott, Kompany in my eyes are good enough. Toure has got stronger as the season has gone on but we could do with an improvement. Rumors that Boetang is coming. We will have to see what he is like in the Premiership.

Left wing/Right wing.
Bellamy. Squad player although I think he will leave. We can improve on him easily. Bellamy is OK just has a lot of effort which rubs off on us fans, but can't get past a man if he stands him up, rarely has a great game, not a great crosser of the ball.
SWP - Hasn't done anything for us this season. can't cross, always runs into dead ends. Johnson stays will improve could become great for us.
Weiss - hasn't got a future at City, he isn't good enough.

Centre Midfield.
Big improves here. Unless Michael Johnson can take a position there.
Vieria can't be expected to do anything for us next year.
Barry just seems too slow, isn't the same player from Aston Villa. Maybe it was the pressure we'll see next year.
De Jong is good at what he does but most games I think he doesn't need to be played. He isn't a great passer of the ball really. But his tackle and breaking up play is good.

Strikers
Ade - Lazy. Only plays when he feels like it. Should be sold imo. Same with Santa Cruz get rid asap. Maybe Bojinvo could do something for us but I doubt we will see him again in a City shirt.

They'll be big changes as we can only have 25 registered players I think next year. Not 100% though. Too many players don't cut it at our club anymore.

Lots more outs than ins for me! Quality not quantity is required imo! We have a really good squad, but I agree with the general concensus on here that a new LB is needed, I'd be inclined to add another CB as well, an attacking/creative CM is needed, and also another forward.
A fully fit MJ would be a major asset next season as well, drive and creativity have been lacking in the midfield the whole season imo.

But for me Sylvinho, Bridge, RSC, Vieira, Benjani, Jo, Bojinov, and Adebayor should all be deemed surplus to requirments, all imo of coarse.
