Our Tactics Under Pellegrini

we start with a 4-2-2-2 but in the attack it often looks like this:

bluethunder, I agree, but I think you have Garcia and Lescott swapped. I think we may see Jovetic sprayed about the formation a bit more, but that's probably more or less what Pellegrini is looking at.

We certainly used the whole pitch. It was noticeable that Navas was prepared to come inside to look for the ball or drag defenders out of position.

Džeko also took his turn playing wide, including for the opening goal.

Zaba and Jesus worked together very wel, down the left and Merlin was back to his best of the title-winning season.

All-in-all, the whole team seemed to enjoy the greater freedom they now have.

This is going to sound like criticism, but it actually isn't. I was impressed by the intelligence Navas displayed last night. In the 1st half, Navas didn't have the speed to outpace Yanga-Mbiwa, he tried 2 or 3 times and Mbiwa denied that portion of his game, so Navas started coming inside more often to keep the play ticking over. I thought it was an excellent on the fly adaptation.

In the 2nd half, Mbiwa was switched to the other side after Taylor's red, so Navas just abused the slower fullback down his flank. It was, I think, a wonderful example of adapting to the team you are playing. As pacy as Navas is, he didn't have the beating of Mbiwa, who was going to maul him or sprint with him, so he changed it up to remain effective.

i think newcastle doubled up on navas. they restricted him on the right side. navas barely had space to run into. in the second half it changed.

They certainly sent a lot of attention his way and seemed to be mindful of his penchant to play the ball past the fullback and run onto it. The red card really defeated any hope they had of trying to contain him with two men, and he really abused them out wide as a result.

I can't but help feel our left side could have been caught open a fair few times, if only newcastle weren't terrible on the night. Pretty right-side driven, not much balance. But perhaps balance isn't necessary.

I didn't notice anything new in the way Aguero played. He has always cut in from wide positions and tried to shoot. That's a feature of his game

The biggest change last night came through the introduction of the two new players. We had the energy of Fernandinho in midfield, and the pace and width of Navas and some very good crosses from Navas

I like the new manager, but let's not endow him with magical powers or put him on a different level to his predecessor until we have seen something of significance

I laughed.

Did you bless yourself and shed a few little tears on 44 minutes for Saint Bob?

Every time Navas went outside a defender I bet a little part of you died ;-)

Apologies for posting twice, but it seems to fit this threat a wee bit better. Just a bit of a look at City's tactics last night and how things have changed under Pellegrini in terms of being more mobile in the final third.

Thanks

I don't want to judge after one game as MP's approach to each game will change due to opposition.

But i cant wait to see Navas against a less defensive team who hold i higher back line :-)
