Under the sale of goods act the retailer is responsible or resolving your issue - don't be put off by them - stand your ground.
After 18 months I'm not so sure but I think it is demonstrably unfit for purpose which is covered under the sale of goods act. See what citizens advice say.

Hi lads, thanks very much for the (sensible) replies !
Went to Homebase, had it out with the manager, and the result is they are going to replace the oven plus £100 goodwill gesture if I want a more expensive one.
