Overrating players/Adam Johnson

Sorry buy for me "a hefty price tag" of £7M + a further £1m is NOT excessive in this day and age.

This kind of justifies my point - at the time we bought him he had well over 50+ games for boro in the prem. So he was experienced. Would anyone here, before we bought him, have said he was worth more. I doubt many would have said he was. Now, i guess everyone would say he is worth more. But he has played 12 games. Thats it.

I don't see your point at all - what are you trying to say? - every player City have signed I have tried to see the good bits (including Martin Phillips) and justify them to myself, and others around me - as fantastic players, even when I know, deep down they are pants or over the hill.

I don't think us overrating them spoils them at all, in fact I don't think our opinions on them on a club forum has any effect on our players whatsoever.

Do you honestly think just because a City fan says on an Internet forum that AJ is worth £20 million that he will lose all skill, sense and power in his legs or that he will be banging down Bobby Mancs door asking for a transfer or a pay rise?

Take yourself outside and give yourself a good talking to fella and stop being so bloody negative - the future is bright, the future is City!!

No i dont think that but i dont want fans to be overrating players making us look daft. Just like we laugh at someone saying they will buy onuha for £5m then we look a bit daft saying Johnson is a £20m + player. No one would have said that when he was at boro yet 12 prem league games for us and he is a world beater.
Im not being negative as such, Johnson is a player with great potential, without a shadow, he isnt, in my opinion, as good as SWP at this time. So why we saying its ok for SWP to go? Not everyones opinion obviously but the stats are there.

I still don't see your point - maybe AJ is worth £20 million now, if City were to buy him in the current transfer market - our poor deluded neighbours have just spent £10 million on a centre half who made 13 professional appearances total, and has already made some catastrophic mistakes, both for them and for England U21s. In addition, flair players and attackers always cost more than defenders - here's a question for you - if you had lived on Mars and came to Eastlands last season and watched SWP for the first half of the season and AJ for the second half of the season - who would you have picked out to be the player who has cost over £30 million quid in transfer fees?

I like Johnson but I can't help but think he'sbeing getting better through the summer with every game he hasn't played.

Ok, ill tell you but you won't believe me - i wouldnt have thought there was much difference between the two. I know you cant judge a player on one game, and this is going to seem like a silly point when im saying dont judge him on 12 games either, but against spurs Johnson just looked lightweight and a little slow for me.

Thats one game and Spurs were the better team. But on the other hand against burnley johnson looked like a world beater.

Adam johnson is over rated - ill say it - come back to me in a couple of years to prove me wrong

I see what you are saying here mate, I think it is partly to do with how England failed, not because they failed. A.Johnson offered something different as a wide player, can go inside and out with pace and has a good delivery, whereas Millner had no pace, lennon had too much pace with poor delivery, SWP slightly erratic, etc.

Ironically, it might have actually made him a better player, because the knowledge that he was good enough to be included in the squad, that he is good enough, but yet was left out, might drive a hunger deep inside to prove this point to people.

Ok, at the end of the day it doesnt matter whether he is under rated or overrated on an interent message board. It is irrelevant really. Just my opinion that whilst he is a good player he is not yet as great as some believe.

To continue with our comparisons between SWP & AJ - here's the clincher for me - AJ is currently playing on the right side of our team - when he was a natural left winger for Boro - and he looks very comfortable there. How good, in comparison, does SWP look when he plays on the left side of our team?

I don't think AJ is overrated by us at all - I think players like Lee bloody Bradbury when we bought him were overrated - and I really do believe that AJ ticks all the boxes to be the best English wide player since Waddle for me - there, I've said it and made the comparison with the player AJ most reminds me of from our footballing past..... and Waddle didn't have a bad career did he?

My logic explained.

We are looking at a player. He has played 50+ games at prem level and whilst showed promise he didnt pull up many trees. Big clubs have looked and decided against - £7m would be too much of a gamble. But we took the gamble.

That £7m gamble has not yet paid out either way after less than 1/3 of season. Some people are already spending the money as they think that gamble has paid off. However no result we be known for sure for sometime, so those people thinking the gamble they took has been won are being a little premature
