RIP Ozzy, amazing that you managed to do your farewell show only a couple of weeks ago. My dad gave me a few old Black Sabbath LPs when I was a teenager, still have them somewhere, I will dig them out and give them a blast later.

Honesty time, I've never actually listened to Black Sabbath. Couldn't name a single song, which is crazy because I like a bit of metal.

What a full life he lived, RIP.

Sabbath are rock, heavy, ballads and a bit more… not all HM. Try one and see… I started on Black Sabbath first album… just… memory!

I've gotten really into it in the past 2/3 years. I think I found it quite inacessible, especially as there's so many sub-genres and niches, but a few of my friends are metalheads and at some point my ear just adjusted and I got it and went back to the early stuff in the late 60s/70's where it was closer to my usual stuff and just did a deep dive. Had a similar thing with rap in my early 20s where growing up firmly a post-punk and alt rock kid I was quite staunchly not a fan, and then it just clicked and I was down a rabbit hole for months.


It's what I love about music so much, there's more incredible music out there than I can ever listen to, and when I get into a new genre it's like I'm a teenager discovering my passion for music all over again.

I don't think anything else does that. With books, film, great TV, it's always great when you find something new, but nothing really opens up new worlds and subcultures like music.

He didn't wither away! He went out on his throne doing what he loved most - more than the drugs and the fame ultimately - the music.

It's not uncommon for old/ill people to hold out for one more thing they feel they need to do and then afterwards go very quickly. Seems like that gig was it for Oz, when it was over he had nothing left undone.

People like to laugh at Ozzy/Sabbath but they were geniuses. Nobody sounded like them at the time and nobody will ever do it better.

It wasn't accidental either, they didn't stumble into their sound, they had a vision of creating horror music the same way there's horror fiction and film, and they created and then perfected it. Iommi really was a musical genius, and Ozzy made himself the perfect front man for it.

I love going to gigs and discovering new music especially through support bands, which then takes you down a rabbit hole of bands/music they promote.
