Manchester City are reportedly keen on signing Atletico Madrid midfielder Pablo Barrios, who they've been tracking since his youth.

If you take anything away from this piece, I’d like for you to understand that while Diego Simeone’s Atlético Madrid have a reputation for midfield bulldogs, Pablo Barrios is not that. He does check the box for the defensive effort level needed to play for the Argentine, but he offers an element of technical ability and effectiveness in ball carrying not often seen at the Wanda Metropolitano. He’s a really exciting prospect, he’s a really good player already, and any conversation involving the dearth of young midfield talent in La Liga is incomplete without mentioning the name Pablo Barrios.

This would be like Real Madrid trying to sign Foden. Unfortunately I think there’s a 0% chance of this happening. Very very good player though, I don’t think Atletico would let him go for less than his €100m release clause, and he might very well be worth €100m. I’d argue he has a higher ceiling than Zubimendi, but is more of an 8/6 hybrid than outright DM

If you’re thinking re price tag I agree to some extent, but he’s a boyhood Atletico fan and came through their academy. Atletico does not need to sell either, and if they were in such a position Barrios would be one of the last names on the list. It’s just very very unrealistic. Kid is very very good though, currently better than other young 8/6s like Palacios, Baleba, Wharton, Mainoo and Rico in my opinion
