Ridiculous

Oh dear, this will cause some issues. I do hear the argument a lot about people drawing some pretty crude images of Jesus (Southpark have done quite a few, as have Private Eye), and therefore why can't you draw an image of Muhammad without incurring the wrath of a helluva lot of Muslims. Now I'm not an expert on Islam, but I do believe that the religion bans any images of Muhammad, whereas the Christian churches are more than happy with images of Jesus to be plastered everywhere (and make a lot of money out of images of Jesus along the way). Also, and I may be corrected on this one, it's not Muslims who are guilty of drawing crude images of Jesus, it's the western media. Therefore should we not just respect the wishes of the Islamic faith and not produce images of Muhammad? I am not religious in any way, but it appears to me that anyone who produces an image of Muhammad is just trying to make mischief (pretty serious mischief at that).

Now, all this is just my opinion, therefore I'm happy with you to pour abuse on my opinion, but don't make it personal!

Is the basic argument here that nothing can/should be done which might offend people? Or is it just religion we should be shielded, and if so, why?

Muhammad forbid his face to be depicted because he didn't want his religion to turn into idol worship. It's not a bad idea really, as far as religion goes, but many Muslims have turned this restraint into an idolatry of sorts.

It's only forbidden for Muslims to depict Muhammad anyway so they really shouldn't care what non muslims do - it's not as if non muslims are going to worship statues of Muhammad.

You can't really compare Jesus and Muhammad. Jesus was all about the worship. If only Terry Wogan had been around back then...

Issue is

You need to understand the basis of the various religions:

Christianity (western religions) tell you what you can't do....thou shall not kill etc. They don't tell you what you can do. So they paint a boundary that we are always pushing against as technology / laws / attitudes change and as long as you don't break the rules youre ok.

Islam and other Eastern religions tell you what you can and have to do. So the boundary can't move. The 'rules' and the religion doesn't bend as things develop.

When islamic people look at what we do and allow in the west it looks to be wrong and corrupt. (ie letting your kids dress 'fashionably' and go out on their own)The more we become tolerant the further away we get from them.

Their religion specifically states that it is an offence to depict mohammed in any form or character. As far as Islamics are concerned therefore there is no argument.

As i said in my other thread...I think people do need to learn about Islam, but not so they can enjoy being part of the culture (by dressing like a fucking Muslim) but so they can be aware of how different to our own it actually is.
