Paris 2024 Olympics Thread - 11th August (pg 430)

The Olympic versions of martial arts are so sanitised. Should chuck some Muay Thai in there.
Not just sanitised, but have become far too technical. It is a lot of sparring and probing, with only brief seconds of actual meaningful physical contact when an opponent makes a minute miscalculation opening themselves up to a strike or a takedown.

As others have said, martial arts like Taekwondo or Judo are reduced to watching grown people kicking each others ankles and shins (or the air) over and over again whilst lightly grasping each other’s robes for 5 minutes, then 2 seconds of a forced fall, and 10 seconds of a pin, or a half second strike before resetting.

Then only people that are interested are the people deeply involved in participating in, coaching, or supporting that level of the competition.

Everyone else is just waiting for the swimming or track events to be put back on, even if they are replays of earlier that day.

It wasn’t the IOC or the sport organisers themselves that really did that, though, it was the top martial artists minmaxing overtime, turning it in to the sterile form on show now. What we watch is what wins medals and competitions, so that is what they are going to do.
