Paris 2024 Olympics Thread - 11th August (pg 430)

I really thought MHS had the gold in his pocket.
To Josh Kerr's credit, in the post race press conference last night, he noted how nothing is taken for granted until crossing the line as it related to Cole Hocker passing him at the end in the 1500.

The same could be said of Quincy Hall tonight, just an amazing final stretch stride and dig.

Hall was in fourth place as he entered the straightaway, and with his final push to win, finished with a personal best 43.4.

Some of these USA athletes are really surprising me at these games. Not just in 1500m and 400m events, but even in the 3K steeplechase tonight, their athlete came very close.
They obviously have some kind of a program of success going on over there at the moment.

Just got pipped for gold at the end, for a change.

It wasn't that close, as Kenneth Rooks was fortunate to hold onto Silver at the end after leading that last lap as he was passed over the final water barrier by the Moroccan. At that point, it was a race for 2nd with the Kenyan. Rooks will gladly take Silver after landing his personal best after coming back from last place at the back of the pack, before making his move forward in the final 2 laps.

Very sad to see Lamecha Girma taken off by stretcher after that horrible fall in the final lap. Hope he'll be OK after medical attention, but that did not look good when it happened.

Cole Hocker moved across the country last November to retrain with his college coach in Blacksburg, VA, where he was recovering from prior injuries. He notes he wouldn't have been able to qualify as the #1 runner in that event if not for his coach's help. I don't think it's a program thing as much as it is an individual effort being seen. During the 1500 as noted last night, all 3 US runners ran together as many from the African nations typically do. That certainly helped them colletively for the 1-3-5 finish there.

Rooks tonight ran solo as the only US runner in that event. The sprinters and 400 didn't surprise me as much given the depth and qualifying times there.

Fucking hell, sick of getting popped on the line! Gutted for him. He ran the perfect race and like Kerr, in time will be buzzing to run a PB and ask the race the way he did. How the yank stayed on two feet and kept going when he was clearly fucked 80m out I do not know. You just can't plan for someone else doing that really.
The American just like last night wanted it more. They’re having a phenomenal Olympics in the track and field and they're simply prepared to push themselves to the limits to win a gold. Like most of the european countries we seem to be there just to make up the numbers.
