'with united using their exceptional turnover to dominate the English game'

Bollox. NOT TO MENTION THE £700 MILLION DEBT WHICH IS NOT THEIRS COS THEY HAVE HAD TO BORROW IT

If it was simply down to a bigger turnover then why do they have the biggest debt of any Premier League club by a country mile???

Conveniently ignored as usual.

that's exactly what they have done

How so? What is difference between them borrowing nearly a billion to buy success and us using our owners resources to attempt to do the same thing?

Don't understand why the media think one is almost corinthian in spirit when it clearly never was, and the other isn't?

The majority of the debt comes from the takeover, its not money that was used on transfers, wages etc

he speaks the truth

up until the glazers saddled the loan debt on the club they did use their exceptional turnover to buy players and dominate the game

he hasn't said anything about us

The debt was incurred by the Glazers to buy the club. They borrowed money before they bought it and then used United to borrow more to pay themselves some of it back. Before that they were debt free.

The Glazers have since increased revenue quite significantly, by putting up prices as far as they can, but they've reached the limit now. However, that revenue increase has been used to pay interest on the debt and now it will also be used to pay them enough to pay their personal debt off.

To be fair, whilst I don't always agree with him, I do find him to be one of the most reasonable of the sports journalists. You at least feel like he thinks things through before he speaks and doesn't just churn out the same shit as everyone else. Martin Samuel is ok too.

Don't know the guy. I'm not a Times reader but he's right about that. Before the takeover, United were a profitable enterprise. The debt from the takeover and the interest due on that debt is the killer.

I agree, he 'usually' reports intelligently and with a degree of humour. He also doesn't mind going against the grain, I believe he was banned by baconface from post/pre match interviews for asking difficult questions. who amongst us.... etc

Not sure about samuel though, jury's still out

Whilst I don't disagree with him in terms of this particular observation (stating the obvious as he so often does) - Barclay is Murdoch boy - an over-rated, rag-rimming conformist twat and he should fuck-off back to the Starshit Enterprise IMHO.

Samuel is a journo that I have more time for. Insightful, interesting, thought-provoking and happy to challenge the sky 4/Murdoch mafia.
