Paul Heaton & Jacqui Abbott

I saw them on a weekend trip to Brussels.
They had just sold out Snackpot County’ ground (10k) and the Brussels show was very intimate, couldn’t have been more than a hundred at the venue. It was absolutely brilliant
Great stuff. I went to the Edgeley Park gig last year and it’s definitely up there as one of the best gigs I’ve ever attended which is some doing as I’ve seen some utterly cracking bands down the years. It probably helped that we had a good spot in the Cheadle End with a quick route to and from the bar and sensible stewarding, whereas other concerts that should’ve been up there with the best of them have been ruined by a combination of shit views, shit bar service, and shit stewarding. Arcade Fire at Castlefield 3 years ago and The Cure at the Arena the year before are 2 examples. Nothing wrong with the bands themselves who smashed it but the overall gig experience was worse than wank.

Saw them live for the first time when they supported The Stone Roses at The Etihad. Absolutely brilliant but I've always liked Paul Heaton. Beautiful South at Manchester Free Trade Hall was the first gig me and Mrs SHB attended back in the early 90's.

Heaton is a good songwriter. He definitely wrote some good politically relevant songs with The Housemartins. London 0 Hull 4 is a great record. He allegedly during his younger days used to fund the travelling expenses of the Blades Business Crew of Sheffield United. He's a big fan of the Blades but lived around Manchester for a number of years

He owns The Kings Arms in Salford.
Its an Holts house, which also sells real ales.
They have a lot if live bands on.
Or did.

Saw them at the Parr Hall in Warrington which is a fairly small venue and they were great. Went to Liverpool a couple of years later (Echo Arena) which wasn’t as good due to it being close to Xmas and full of pissheads singing at the top of their voices which when in Liverpool isn’t a good sound!
