paul lake

Nobody I can think of in the modern game quite like him. In a way, closest to home, Vinny I guess.

But imagine Vinny Kompany playing in a commanding CB role, winning headers, making last ditch tackles, playing the ball out etc etc in the first half. Then in the second half he gets pushed into left midfield as an attacking midfielder and looks a threat, playing the right balls, creating space and pushing up onto the opposition to get the ball back, then creating a goal with a left foot cross, before scoring one himself with a curling right footer.

Yes, Vinny I think, with a bit more about him in the final third, or possibly Gerrard if he was a bit taller and better in the air. Truth is, he was a bit special and a true honour to have watched him. Some stars don't shine for very long, but whilst they do they are simply blinding.

Still, not as if that is that and nothing more. He's still carved out 2 or 3 careers for himself since retiring from playing. Not bad going really.

he could have been a legend both for england and a top club sadly not a chance in hell in the blue and white of city with swales at the club he would have sold to liverpool or arsenal or gone to italy

but in the short time we had him he was head and shoulders ahead of anything we had on the books at manchester city

The best player of that era. 20 or 21 years old and Captain. One of the most graceful players I've ever seen. Class act.

You might want to have a look at his autobiography. It was very good reading but a tear came to my eye on occassions.

Yes he was a great player and could, no would have been one of Englands finest. he was such a versatile player, back four midfield hell everywhere. I think there is a quote that one year apart from goalkeeper he played in every position. A true great and I hope his demons are behind him (read his book to understand the last)

Paul Lake was a cracking player, great skill and great composure on the ball. He would definitely have gone on to captain England - and is still an incredible asset to our club

100+ caps for England, captain of club and country and all would have been done with a class and calmness that you dont associate with modern footballers... he would have been a great, a modern day Bobby Moore, so sad what happened, bad luck and bad treatment meant we lost the finest of his generation just as he was coming to his peak. All you have to do is read what Howard Kendall said about him.

Awesome! He would have gone to Italy like gazza and platt in my opinion and been a great over there.

yep and for peanuts aswell
swales was a clown of a chairman and never even backed Billy McNeill with the best youth team in england 6/7 great young players that needed a couple of old heads

but Billy McNeill got out when ask for money swales turn him down and he went to villa

we had the 1st fergie setup at man city meaning Billy McNeill was the master
and fergie learn his ways
